4、showotherpeopleperceivethem.AccordingtoPiersandLandau,inanarticlediscussingthetheoriesofErikH.EriksoninInternationalEncyclopediaofSocialSciences(1979),identityisdeterminedbygeneticendowment(whatisinheritedfromparents),shapedbyenvironment,andinfluencedbychanceevents.Peopleareinfluencedbytheirenvironm

10、enda.Second,thereisattitudinalindependence,whichmeansthatindividualslearntoseeandacceptthedifferencebetweentheirownattitudes,values,andbeliefsandthoseoftheirparents.Thethirdprocessofpsychologicalseparationisemotionalindependence.Hoffmandefinesthisprocessasfreedomfromanexcessiveneedforapproval,closen
11、ess,togetherness,andemotionalsupportinrelationtothemotherandfather.Forexample,collegestudentswouldfeelfreetoselectthemajorthattheywanttopursuewithoutfeelingtheymusthaveparentalapproval.Fourthisfreedomfromexcessiveguilt,anxiety,mistrust,responsibility,inhibition,resentment,andangerinrelationtothemoth

27、dbeawareofhowtheyreacttonewknowledgeandnewwaysoflearning,howtheyprocesstheknowledgepresentedtothem,andhowtheyorganizethisknowledge.Andlastofall,theseyoungadultsarebecomingworldcitizens,arebecomingawarenotonlyofothergroupsintheirownculturebutalsoofpeopleofothercultures.Astheymeetthesepeopleandinterac
