AnewAmericanweathersatellitecouldsavemorelivesbybetterpredictingextremeweatherconditions.ThesatellitewaslaunchedinthestateofFloridaonNovember19,2016.TheNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministration,alsoknownasNOAA,hasbeenworkingwiththeNationalAeronauticsandSpaceAdministration(NASA)ontheproject.
NOAAofficialsarecallingthenewsatelliteGOES-R.Thatisshortforamuchlongername—theGeostationaryOperationalEnvironmentalSatellite—RSeries.
NOAAsaidGOES-Rcouldimprovethenation'sabilitytoobserveweatherconditionsandmakeweatherpredictions.Itsaidthesatellite'sdevicewouldleadtomoreexactandtimelyweatherforecasts,watchesandwarnings.
Thegovernmentagencysaidthesatellitewillrequiretestingofitssixinstrumentsandwillbereadytowork"withinayear."Oneofthesixinstrumentsonthesatelliteisdesignedtohelpscientistsstudylightningstrikesandmapthem.This,NOAAsays,willhelptheagencyfollowthemovementofseverestormsandprovidemoredetailedwarnings.
