In1770CaptainJamesCookarrivedinBotanyBay.HeclaimedthewholeofAustraliaforBritain.HisreportofhisdiscoverycausedconsiderableinterestinEngland;noattemptwasmadetosendsettlersuntiltheAmericanWarofIndependence.BritainneededalternativeoverseassettlementsforlawbreakerssentencedtotransportationandforrelievingtheinhumanovercrowdingofitsprisonalongtheThamesRiver.
On26January1788,nowcommemoratedasAustralia’snationalday,CaptainArthurPhillipestablishedapenalsettlementatPortJackson,asthefirstGovernoroftheBritishcolonyofNewSouthWales.ThissmallconvictsettlementgrewtobecomeAustralia’slargestcity,Sydney.
Overthenext80years,therewasmuchexplorationinAustralia.SettlementsweresetupinHobart,Brisbane,PerthandMelbourneandthesesettlementsweretobecomethecapitalcitiesofthestates,formingstartingpointsforfurtherexplorationandsettlementinland.TransportationtoAustraliaendedcompletelyin1868.In1901thepopulationofAustraliawas3,370,000.
