Itsgoodtobehome.MyfellowAmericans,MichelleandIhavebeensotouchedbyallthewell-wisheswevereceivedoverthepastfewweeks.Buttonightitsmyturntosaythanks.Whetherweveseeneye-to-eyeorrarelyagreedatall,myconversationswithyou,theAmericanpeople–inlivingroomsandschools;atfarmsandonfactoryfloors;atdinersandondistantoutposts–arewhathavekeptmehonest,keptmeinspired,andkeptmegoing.Everyday,Ilearnedfromyou.YoumademeabetterPresident,andyoumademeabetterman.IfirstcametoChicagowhenIwasinmyearlytwenties,stilltryingtofigureoutwhoIwas;stillsearchingforapurposetomylife.ItwasinneighborhoodsnotfarfromherewhereIbeganworkingwithchurchgroupsintheshadowsofclosedsteelmills.ItwasonthesestreetswhereIwitnessedthepoweroffaith,andthequietdignityofworkingpeopleinthefaceofstruggleandloss.ThisiswhereIlearnedthatchangeonlyhappenswhenordinarypeoplegetinvolved,getengaged,andcometogethertodemandit.AftereightyearsasyourPresident,Istillbelievethat.Anditsnotjustmybelief.ItsthebeatingheartofourAmericanidea–ourboldexperimentinself-government.Itstheconvictionthatweareallcreatedequal,endowedbyourCreatorwithcertainunalienablerights,amongthemlife,liberty,andthepursuitofhappiness.Itstheinsistencethattheserights,whileself-evident,haveneverbeenself-executing;thatWe,thePeople,throughtheinstrumentofourdemocracy,canformamoreperfectunion.ThisisthegreatgiftourFoundersgaveus.Thefreedomtochaseourindividualdreamsthroughoursweat,toil,andimagination–andtheimperativetostrivetogetheraswell,toachieveagreatergood.For240years,ournationscalltocitizenshiphasgivenworkandpurposetoeachnewgeneration.Itswhatledpatriotstochooserepublicovertyranny,pioneerstotrekwest,slavestobravethatmakeshiftrailroadtofreedom.ItswhatpulledimmigrantsandrefugeesacrossoceansandtheRioGrande,pushedwomentoreachfortheballot,poweredworkerstoorganize.ItswhyGIsgavetheirlivesatOmahaBeachandIwoJima;IraqandAfghanistan–andwhymenandwomenfromSelmatoStonewallwerepreparedtogivetheirsaswell.SothatswhatwemeanwhenwesayAmericaisexceptional.Notthatournationhasbeenflawlessfromthestart,butthatwehaveshownthecapacitytochange,andmakelifebetterforthosewhofollow.Yes,ourprogresshasbeenuneven.Theworkofdemocracyhasalwaysbeenhard,contentiousandsometimesbloody.Foreverytwostepsforward,itoftenfeelswetakeonestepback.ButthelongsweepofAmericahasbeendefinedbyforwardmotion,aconstantwideningofourfoundingcreedtoembraceall,andnotjustsome.IfIhadtoldyoueightyearsagothatAmericawouldreverseagreatrecession,rebootourautoindustry,andunleashthelongeststretchofjobcreationinourhistoryifIhadtoldyouthatwewouldopenupanewchapterwiththeCubanpeople,shutdownIransnuclearweaponsprogramwithoutfiringashot,andtakeoutthemastermindof9/11ifIhadtoldyouthatwewouldwinmarriageequality,andsecuretherighttohealthinsuranceforanother20millionofourfellowcitizens–youmighthavesaidoursightsweresetalittletoohigh.Butthatswhatwedid.Thatswhatyoudid.Youwerethechange.Youansweredpeopleshopes,andbecauseofyou,byalmosteverymeasure,Americaisabetter,strongerplacethanitwaswhenwestarted.Intendays,theworldwillwitnessahallmarkofourdemocracy:
thepeacefultransferofpowerfromonefreely-electedpresidenttothenext.IcommittedtoPresident-ElectTrumpthatmyadministrationwouldensurethesmoothestpossibletransition,justasPresidentBushdidforme.Becauseitsuptoallofustomakesureourgovernmentcanhelpusmeetthemanychallengeswestillface.Wehavewhatweneedtodoso.Afterall,weremainthewealthiest,mostpowerful,andmostrespectednationonEarth.Ouryouthanddrive,ourdiversityandopenness,ourboundlesscapacityforriskandreinventionmeanthatthefutureshouldbeours.Butthatpotentialwillberealizedonlyifourdemocracyworks.Onlyifourpoliticsreflectsthedecencyoftheourpeople.Onlyifallofus,regardlessofourpartyaffiliationorparticularinterest,helprestorethesenseofcommonpurposethatwesobadlyneedrightnow.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontonight–thestateofourdemocracy.Understand,democracydoesnotrequireuniformity.Ourfoundersquarreledandcompromised,andexpectedustodothesame.Buttheyknewthatdemocracydoesrequireabasicsenseofsolidarity–theideathatforallouroutwarddifferences,weareallinthistogether;thatweriseorfallasone.Therehavebeenmomentsthroughoutourhistorythatthreatenedtorupturethatsolidarity.Thebeginningofthiscenturyhasbeenoneofthosetimes.Ashrinkingworld,growinginequality;demographicchangeandthespecterofterrorism–theseforceshaventjusttestedoursecurityandprosperity,butourdemocracyaswell.Andhowwemeetthesechallengestoourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,andcreategoodjobs,andprotectourhomeland.Inotherwords,itwilldetermineourfuture.Ourdemocracywontworkwithoutasensethateveryonehaseconomicopportunity.Today,theeconomyisgrowingagain;wages,incomes,homevalues,andretirementaccountsarerisingagain;povertyisfallingagain.Thewealthyarepayingafairershareoftaxesevenasthestockmarketshattersrecords.Theunemploymentrateisnearaten-yearlow.Theuninsuredratehasnever,everbeenlower.Healthcarecostsarerisingattheslowestrateinfiftyyears.Andifanyonecanputtogetheraplanthatisdemonstrablybetterthantheimprovementswevemadetoourhealthcaresystem–thatcoversasmanypeopleatlesscost–Iwillpubliclysupportit.That,afterall,iswhyweserve–tomakepeopleslivesbetter,notworse.Butforalltherealprogresswevemade,weknowitsnotenough.Oureconomydoesntworkaswellorgrowasfastwhenafewprosperattheexpenseofagrowingmiddleclass.Butstarkinequalityisalsocorrosivetoourdemocraticprinciples.Whilethetoponepercenthasamassedabiggershareofwealthandincome,toomanyfamilies,ininnercitiesandruralcounties,havebeenleftbehind–thelaid-offfactoryworker;thewaitressandhealthcareworkerwhostruggletopaythebills–convincedthatthegameisfixedagainstthem,thattheirgovernmentonlyservestheinterestsofthepowerful–arecipeformorecynicismandpolarizationinourpolitics.Therearenoquickfixestothislong-termtrend.Iagreethatourtradeshouldbefairandnotjustfree.Butthenextwaveofeconomicdislocationwontcomefromoverseas.Itwillcomefromtherelentlesspaceofautomationthatmakesmanygood,middle-classjobsobsolete.Andsowemustforgeanewsocialcompact–toguaranteeallourkidstheeducationtheyneed;togiveworkersthepowertounionizeforbetterwages;toupdatethesocialsafetynettoreflectthewaywelivenowandmakemorereformstothetaxcodesocorporationsandindividualswhoreapthemostfromtheneweconomydontavoidtheirobligationstothecountrythatsmadetheirsuccesspossible.Wecanargueabouthowtobestachievethesegoals.Butwecantbecomplacentaboutthegoalsthemselves.Forifwedontcreateopportunityforallpeople,thedisaffectionanddivisionthathasstalledourprogresswillonlysharpeninyearstocome.Theresasecondthreattoourdemocracy–oneasoldasournationitself.Aftermyelection,therewastalkofapost-racialAmerica.Suchavision,howeverwell-intended,wasneverrealistic.Forraceremainsapotentandoftendivisiveforceinoursociety.Ivelivedlongenoughtoknowthatracerelationsarebetterthantheywereten,ortwenty,orthirtyyearsago–youcanseeitnotjustinstatistics,butintheattitudesofyoungAmericansacrossthepoliticalspectrum.Butwerenotwhereweneedtobe.Allofushavemoreworktodo.Afterall,ifeveryeconomicissueisframedasastrugglebetweenahardworkingwhitemiddleclassandundeservingminorities,thenworkersofallshadeswillbeleftfightingforscrapswhilethewealthywithdrawfurtherintotheirprivateenclaves.Ifwedeclinetoinvestinthechildrenofimmigrants,justbecausetheydontlooklikeus,wediminishtheprospectsofourownchildren–becausethosebrownkidswillrepresentalargershareofAmericasworkforce.Andoureconomydoesnthavetobeazero-sumgame.Lastyear,incomesroseforallraces,allagegroups,formenandforwomen.Goingforward,wemustupholdlawsagainstdiscrimination–inhiring,inhousing,ineducationandthecriminaljusticesystem.ThatswhatourConstitutionandhighestidealsrequire.Butlawsalonewontbeenough.Heartsmustchange.Ifourdemocracyistoworkinthisincreasinglydiversenation,eachoneofusmusttrytoheedtheadviceofoneofthegreatcharactersinAmericanfiction,AtticusFinch,whosaidYouneverreallyunderstandapersonuntilyouconsiderthingsfromhispointofviewuntilyouclimbintohisskinandwalkaroundinit.Forblacksandotherminorities,itmeanstyingourownstrugglesforjusticetothechallengesthatalotofpeopleinthiscountryface–therefugee,theimmigrant,theruralpoor,thetransgenderAmerican,andalsothemiddle-agedwhitemanwhofromtheoutsidemayseemlikehesgotalltheadvantages,butwhosseenhisworldupendedbyec
