PresentationRomeoandJulietwasaproductoftheEnglishRenaissancewhileTheButterflyLoverembodiedthelifeinthefeudalChina.However,thesetwoworkssharedthesametheme,thatis,theconflictbetweenloveandfeudalism.Althoughthemaincharacterswerefaithfultolove,thereexistedsimplytoomanyobstaclesontheirwaystotrueloveandmarriage.Inordertoprotecttheirlove,theystoodagainsttheirrespectivefeudalfamilies(P4,李).Theyfailedanddiedforloveintheend.Theywereliketwosisterplays.
RomeoandJuliet’sfamilieswereenemies.Buttheyfellindeeplovewitheachotherattheirfirstsightattheball.Suchloveaffairsbetweenthefamiliesinfeudcertainlyledtogreatconflict.Inordertoprotecttheirlove,RomeoandJuliettookallkindsofactionstorevoltagainstthefeudalism.WiththehelpofPriestLaurence,theygotmarriedquicklywithouttellingtheirparents.Meanwhile,theoldLordCapulethadbeenplanningforhisdaughterJuliet’sfuture.HehadchosenanoblemannamedParistobeherhusband.HesupposedthatJulietwouldfeelhonoredandgladtoaccepthimasherhusband.Sheperplexedhermotherbyherplaindistress.SherefusedtomarryParis.Itseemedtoherfatherthatshewasputtingobstaclesinthewayofherowngoodfortune.SohesternlyorderedhertobereadybyThursday.Inherextremity,Julietdecidedtoseekhelpofthekindpriest.InordertobetogetherwithRomeo,Juliettookthemedicinebravelyontheeveoftheweddingdayandlostconsciousness.Romeogotthenewsofher“death”andfeltdespairing.Sohekissedherandthendrankthepoison.WhenJulietcametoherself,shefoundherRomeowasdead,thenshekilledherself.Thisclimaxoftheconflictresultedinthispairwinningtheirlove,butwiththesacrificeoftheirlives.
AstoTheButterflyLover,ideallovewasalsoimpossible.TheyoungpeopleshouldobeytheirparentsastothemarriageintraditionalChina.AlthoughZhuwasanoutstandingwomaninthefeudalChina,shefacedanenvironmentwhichbarredherfromrealizingherdreams(P101,李).Althoughgoingtoschoolwasquitedifficultevenprohibitiveforawomanatthattime,Zhumanagedtoconvinceherfathertoallowhertoattendclassesindisguiseasaman.DuringherjourneytoHangzhou,shemetLiangShanbobychance.TheystudiedtogetherforthenextthreeyearsinschoolandZhugraduallyfellinlovewithLiang.ButLiangwasstillabookwormandfailedtonoticethefemininecharacteristics.WhenZhuaskedforstudyinginschoollikeotherboys,hersister-in-lawcreateddifficultiesforherevenridiculedher,sayingZhuwouldloseherchastityduringtheperiod.ThenZhuhadtoputaflowerintoaflowervaseandsworethatifshebehavedimproperly,theflowerwoulddie,andifnot,itwouldkeepaliveuntilshecameback.Lateron,shewenttoschool.Buthersister–in-lawdidnotgiveup,sheputsomeboiledwaterintothevaseinthehopethattheflowerwoulddieatonce.Fortunately,herplotfailed,theflowergrewmoreandmorebeautiful.ThisepisodebeforethelaterlovetragedysignifiedinadvancethehugefeudalpressureonZhu(P34,程).Insuchanenvironment,Zhu’spursuitoflovewasnotlikeRomeoandJuliet’s.ZhufellinlovewithLiang,butbecauseofthefeudalismaswellasherfamilystatus,Zhucouldnotshowherloveopenly.ComparedwithRomeoandJuliet,shewasbroughtuptobereserved.Therefore,herlovetoLiangcouldonlybedevelopedlittlebylittle,slowlyandsubconsciously.ZhufellinlovewithLiang,withoutrevealinghertrueidentity.Sheinvitedhimtovisitherhomeandmeetheryoungersister(Zhuherself).Throughoutallthistime,LiangwascompletelyoblivioustothefactthatZhuwasinfactayoungwomanwhofellhopelesslyinlovewithhim.Whenthetimecameforthemtoreturntotheirrespectivevillages,Zhutriedinvain,toletLiangknowthetruth.Liangfellinlovewithhisclassmate'sfemaleform;andpromisedtoreturntomarryher.WhenZhureturnedhome,herfatherhadalreadyarrangedadifferentsuitorforherandpreparedtomarryherofftoapowerfulnoble'sson.Bythetime,Liangrushedtoherhometoseekher,butitwastoolate.Herfather'swillhadprevailed.ItwasnotlongbeforeLiangsuccumbedanddiedofabrokenheart.Theconflictbetweenidealloveandfeudalismdeprivedthemoftheirloveandevenlives.
Theleadingroles’pursuitsofidealloveandmarriageexpressedthecharacters’naturalinstincts(ShakespeareP6).InRomeoandJuliet,theleadingroles’familiesweretherepresentativesofthefeudalpower.Theywouldfightonthestreetevenwhentheyjusthappenedtomeeteachother,letalonepermittheirposteritiestoloveeachother.HerearethesentencesbyJuliet’sfather:

Out,youbaggage!
Youtallow-face!
(ShakespeareP30)
WecanfindthatwhenJulietrefusedtomarrythemanshedidnotlove,herparentsscoldedherseverelyandthreatenedhertoleavethefamily.Therefore,JulietcouldresistherfatherwithmuchlesscompunctionthanZhu.ThiswaswhyJulietwasluckierthanZhu.ForherfamilyandRomeo’sweredeadlyenemies,buttheystillhadadream,whichwastoescapewiththehelpoftheCatholicfather,givinguptheirfamilynamesandlivinghappilytogetherwitheachotherinanotherplaceforever(P49,乔).Inordertorealizethisdream,theycoulddoanything.Andtheconflictwouldbeclearedawayiftheysucceed.InTheButterflyLover,theyfacedalsoaheavyfeudalsociety.ThedifferencewasthatZhucouldnotresistherfamilystronglyandcompletelylikeJuliet.AlthoughherfamilyforcedhertomarryMaWencai,that’sbecausetheylovedZhusomuch.ForintraditionalfeudalChina,inpeople’smind,includingZhu’sparents,marryingarichfamilywasgoodtoZhu’sfamily,sotheyjustpersuadedZhutimeandtimeagainwithgoodintentions.MaybethiskindoflovewasnotsuitableforZhu,butshecouldnotrefuse.Therefore,ZhucouldnotresistthemlikeRomeoandJuliet.AndthiswaswhyZhuwasmoreunfortunatethanRomeoandJuliet.
Peoplearenotisolated,especiallyfortheleadingrolesinaplay;livinginthespecificenvironments,peopletendtoinheritpartsoftheircharactertraitsfromtheirsurroundings.Andtheircharactersdecidetheirwill.Theywilltakeallkindsofmeasuresunderthecontroloftheirstrongdesires.Thispartwillexaminehowthecharacterizationsineachworkcontributetothedifferencesinthemepresentationdiscussedabove.
