withthedevelopmentofglobalization,communicationplaysanindispensablerole.Asanimportantbridgeofcultureandinformationexchange,tourismhasagreatimpactonhumanlifeandsocialprogressindifferentcountries.chinainparticularisagreatandold-linecountry,wheremoreandmoreforeignersareeagertovisitchina.therefore,tourismindustrygetsasteadyandquickdevelopment.English,asaninternationallanguage,becomesanimportantwayforcommunicationamongdifferentcountries.Becauseofthedevelopmentofchinesetourism,alargenumberoftourismtalents,withexcellentabilitiesofEnglishlanguageandcomprehensivepracticaltourismserviceskill,becomeanurgentneed.Inordertosatisfythejobmarketandincreasetheemploymentrateofgraduates,alotofcollegeshaveopenedtourismEnglishcourseforcultivatingsuchinterdisciplinarytalents.however,tourismEnglishcoursefacesmanyproblems.Forexample,tourismindustryemployerscomplaingraduates’occupationalcompetenceandin-schoolstudentshavelowmotivationtolearnbecauseofthedistancebetweenthecontenttaughtinclassandthecontentneededinreality;
studentsalsocriticizethegapbetweenthecontenttaughtinclassandthecontentstudentsexpectstolearn.UnawareofthespiritofESpteachingandcharacteristicsoftourismEnglishteaching,mosttourismEnglishteachersstilluseconventionalteachingmethodtoteachESpcourse.whetherthetourismEnglishknowledgestudentslearnfromthecourseisjusttheknowledgetheycanuseinthefuture?

thesequestionsneedtoberesearched.however,theresearchesontourismEnglishareratherlittlecomparedwithotherspecificEnglishcourses.ResearchersabroadareinclinedtoanalyzethelinguisticfeaturesoftourismEnglish,whileinchinaresearchersfocusonthestatusandteachingmethodsoftourismEnglish.ForhavinganempiricalstudyontourismEnglishcourseinaUniversity,Needsanalysis,asanessentialandkeystagetoESpteaching,hasadoptedtodoacomprehensiveresearch.Ithasacloserelationshipwiththecurriculum,teachingmaterials,teachingmethodsandevaluationsofESpcoursedesign,containingpresentsituationanalysis,targetneedsanalysisandlearningneedsanalysis.throughinvestigatingthepresentsituationoftourismEnglishrelatingtoteachingmaterial,teacher’squality,teachingmethodology,coursedesignandevaluation,theexistingproblemsinthecoursewillbeanalyzed,thenamoresuitabletourismEnglishcoursebasedontheneedsanalysisandproblemsanalysiswillbeputforward.

thisstudytakesthestudentsselectingtourismEnglishcourseinaUniversityasresearchsubjects,whichisacasestudytoseethecurrentlearningsituationandstudents’reallearningneedstocheckifstudents’learningneedsaremet.theauthorstudiescurrentsituationfromanalyzingteachingmaterial,teacher’squality,teachingmethodology,coursedesignandevaluationoftourismEnglish.meanwhile,theauthoralsoresearcheslearners’targetneeds,knowingwhatknowledgelearnerswanttomasterandwhatskillslearnerswanttoimprovethroughtourismEparedwithlearners’expectation,wecanknowwhethertheexistingtourismEnglishmeetsthelearners’needs.Inordertofulfilllearners’objective,theauthorstudieslearners’learningneeds.Fromwherelearnersstand,whatteachingmaterialtheylikebest,whatkindofteacheraretheirfavoriteteacher,whatkindofteachingmethodologytheyexpect,whatsuggestionofcoursedesigntheyhave,whatcontentoftestisthemostvalidandwhatlearningstrategiestheyadopt.Basedontheanalysisoflearners’expectationandtheproblemsthepresentcourseexists,theresearchprovidessomesuggestionstopromotethedevelopmentoftourismEnglishteaching.

EnglishforSpecificpurposecanbeabbreviatedtoESp,whoseconceptisfirstputforwardbyhallidayinhisbooktheLinguisticScienceandLanguageteachingin1964.thisbookpresentsafactthattheteachingcontentandteachingmethodshoulddependonlearner’sspecificneeds,suchas,Englishforpoliceman,Englishforofficialsofthelaw,forspecialistsinagricultureandsoon.thoughhallidaydoesnotgiveusacleardefinition,itisnodenyingthathisbookmarksthebeginningofESpstudyinappliedlinguistics.withthedevelopmentofESpstudy,moreandmoreresearcherstrytousetheirownunderstandingtodefinethedefinitionofESp.thereareseveralpopulardefinitionsofESptobereviewedhere.hutchinsonandwatersdefineESpasanapproachratherthanaproduct.theymakeaconclusionthat“ESpisanapproachtolanguageteachinginwhichalldecisionsastocontentandmethodarebasedonthelearner’sreasonforlearning”(hutchinson&
