I.Introduction
Languageisasocialphenomenon,andeachlanguagestandsforoneculture.Tosomeextent,languageandculturedevelopsimultaneouslyasanideaisfirmlyheldthatlanguageoccupiesaveryspecialpositioninculturewhencomparedwithotherelements,thoughlanguageisapartoftheparallelofcultureinalargersense.Withthedevelopmentofmodernsocietyandthetendencytowardsglobalization,English,asainternationallanguage,isgraduallybecominganecessityforpeopleofourday.However,whenlearningEnglish,somenativespeakersaswellasnonnativespeakersoftenexpresstheirsurpriseatthewideuseanddistributionofEnglishidioms.Theyaresometimesatalosstounderstandwhattheyarereadingandhearingbecauseoftheuseoftheseidioms.Asaresult,theymaynotbeabletofullyunderstandtheEnglishculture.
Englishisalanguageparticularlyrichinidioms----thosemodesofexpressionpeculiartoalanguage(ofdialect)thatfrequentlydefylogicalandgrammaticalrules.WithoutidiomsEnglishwouldlosemuchofitsvarietyandhumorbothinspeechandwritingwhileusingitproperly,peoplewillnotonlyenhancetheabilitytoexpressallsortsofideasbutalsotheabilitytoappreciateculture,whichthenimprovesthelinguisticability.EnglishidiomrelatesocloselytoEnglishculturethattheyarelikeadropintheoceanofEnglishcultureandreflectthesignificanceofEnglishculture.
Idiomsarepervasive.Alargepartofoureverydaylinguisticrepertoireisformedbyidioms.Theyariseinthenaturaluseofnaturallanguage.Thecreationofidiomsreflectsnewwayinwhichindividualsconstructconceptsoftheworldandconveythemvividly.Peopleenjoyidiomsfortheirincisiveness,theirfrequentwit,theirpolish,andtheirsavor.Familiaritywithawiderangeofidiomsandtheabilitytousethemappropriatelyincontextareamongthedistinguishmarksofanative-likecommandoflanguage.Coloridiomscanreflectthedeepnationalcolorsandtheirdistinctculturalcharacteristicsaswellasthedifferentcharactersofvariousnationsandhistories.Thisbringsaboutthedifferentspecialtiesofdifferentnations.Alltheserequirethetranslatorclearlyandextensivelylearnaboutothercultures,beliefs,customsandsoonsoastotrulyconveythevalueandessenceofonecountry.Onlyinthisway,canweeffectivelypromoteourculturalcommunication.
II.BackgroundofthePresentStudy
Discoursewillnormallyrequireasuccessfulblendofconventionalizedandoriginallanguage.Fillmore(1979)maintainthatformulaiclanguageisfarmorepervasivethanisoftenrealizedandthatmasteryofidiomsandotherformulaecontributestofluentperformancecharacteristicoftheablenativespeaker:
“Thestrategyofacquiringformulaiclanguageiscentraltothelearningoflanguage:
indeed,itisthestepthatputsthelearnerinapositiontoperformtheanalysiswhichisprerequisitetoacquisition.Formulaiclanguageconstitutesthelinguisticmaterialonwhichalargepartoftheir(learner’s)analyticalactivitiescouldbecarriedout(Fillmore,640).”
BritishlinguistJohnSinclair(1991)goessofarastosuggestthat“theidiomprinciple”maywellbethebasicunderlyingprincipleoflanguageproductionundernormalcircumstances.DrawingonhisdecadesofinvestigatingvastquantitiesofnaturallyoccurringlanguageaspartoftheUniversityofBirmingham/CollinsPublishersCobuildProject,heputsforwardhistheoryof“theidiomprinciple”forcefully:
“Alanguageuserhasavailabletohimorherlargenumberofsemi-reconstructedphrasesthatconstitutesinglechoices,eventhoughtheymightappeartobeanalyzableintosegments.Tosomeextent,thismayreflecttherecurrenceofsimilarsituationsinhumanaffairs;
itmayillustrateanaturaltendencytoeconomyofeffort;
oritmaybemotivatedinpartbytheexigenciesofreal-timeconversation(Sinclair,110).”
AccordingtoSinclair,thereisnodoubtoftheroleofidiomsinfacilitatinginteractionby,forinstance,indicatingthespeaker’s/writer’sattitude,evaluatingpeopleorevents,directingthediscourse,oralludingtosharedknowledgeorexperience.
Thelastfewdecadeshavewitnessed,alongsideageneralmovetowardssociolinguisticsandpragmatics,animportantnumberofstudiesturningtheirattentiontoidiomrepresentationandprocessingthatcoversemantic,structural,functionalandcognitivedescriptionsofidioms.Variousclassesofidiomshavebeenproposed.Attitudesandnormsareofteninextricablyboundupwithidiomaticexpressions.Peopleresorttoidiomsnotonlytocommunicatepropositionalcontentbutalsotoreflectuponandexpressattitudesandemotions.Insomecases,idiomsfunctionasakindofeuphemism,theuseofwhichmakesitmoresociallyacceptabletomakecommentsoneventsorpeoplethantheuseofanon-idiomaticexpressionwouldbe.Tolearnaculture’sidioms,therefore,learnersneedtobemadeawareofthecontextinwhichtheidiomsoccur.Itisveryoftenimpossibletoinferthemeaningofanidiomuntilitisseeninitsimmediatecontext(骆,14-18).
Ⅲ.AResearchonEnglishIdioms
Thetraditionalidiomstudiesmainlyclassifyandinterprettheirfunctionsandresources.Withtheappearanceofstructurallinguisticsandtransformationallinguisticspeoplegiveacomprehensivelinguisticformanalysisaboutthestructureofvocabulary,thecharacterofsemanticmeaningandthefunctionofsyntaxofidioms.Currently,theidiomstudyisthehorizontalandverticalaspects.Inresentyears,thestudyofEnglishidiomshasbeendevelopingintoitsculture,functionandpragmaticandsoon.Fromtheculturalperspective,peopleconsiderEnglishidiomsastheproductsofespeciallysocialcultures.Theyprobetheresourcesofidiomsandthesocial-culturalaspectsthatarereflectedbyidioms(彭,13).
A.TherangeofEnglishidioms
Likeanyotherkindofidioms,Englishidiomsconsistofsetphrasesandshortsayings,whicharepeculiartothelanguageinquestionandstemfromnationalandregionalcultureandideas,colorful,forcibleandthought-provoking.Strictlyspeaking,idiomsareexpressionsthatarenotreadilyunderstandablefromtheirliteralmeaningsofindividualconstituents(张维友,2004:
228).Inabroadsense,idiomsofwhichmostarecolloquialmayincludephrasalverbs,pairsofwords,fixedgroupofwords,etc.
B.Thedevelopmentofidioms
Withthedevelopmentofpeople’ssocialandlivingcircumstances,idiomshavealsochangedsincethetimethatpeoplestartedtocommunicateinlanguage.Someoldidiomsout-of-datemayhavebeenabandonedormodifiedbypeople,orhavetakenonnewmeaningsastimegoesby.However,idiomsarestillcolorful,activeandsteadilyusedinmanyaspectsbyordinarypeopleevenbyfamouswritersintheirworks.
C.TheoriginsofEnglishidioms
Idiomsaremostlycreatedbydiligentlaborers,workers,farmers,sailors,etc.Idiomshavegottheirrootsdeepinpeople’sdailylifeanddailywork.Fortheidiomsusers,itiseasyandhandytoexpresstheirthoughtsbyidiomsthattheycreated.Mostoftheidiomsarefromtheliteralworks,ancientfables,mythologies,traditionalcustom,sports,farming,animals’characters,cooking,dailylifeandsoon,andthentheyareacceptedbythemass.Theyalmostincludeeveryaspectofpeople’slifeanditistheculturalbackgroundidiomscarrythatmakeslearnersfeelhardtounderstandanditisalsothecruxofstudyingidioms.
