sultimatejudgment--thegoodwillberewardedandtheevilwillbepunished.Mr.Brocklehurstisacruel,hypocriticalandabusiveman.AllhispietytoGodisshallowdisplay.Heembodiesanevangelicalformofreligionandseekstogainpowerandcontrolothersbytakingadvantageofreligion.St.Johnisentirelyalienatedfromhisfeelingsanddevotedsolelytoanaustereambition--beamissionary,thefollowerofGod.ThoughheisnotareligioushypocritelikeBrocklehurst,butheisalsorigidlyprincipledandlackingempathythathisbehaviorispotentiallyjustasdestructive.Janeultimatelyrejectsallthethreemodelsofreligionassheformsherownideasaboutfaithandprinciple.Butshedoesnotabandonmorality,spiritualismandabeliefinaChristianGod.ForJane,religionhelpscurbimmoderatepassions,anditspursoneontoworldlyeffortsandachievements.Theseachievementsincludefullself-knowledgeandcompletefaithinGod.

lifeistouchedbythisreligion,somuchsothatithasbecomepartandparcelofwesternculture.TheBibleisacollectionofreligiouswritingscomprisingstoriesofGod,thelawsofGodandthedoctrineofJesusChrist.TheBibleisthemostpopularbookinthecultureofmankind.Itistheessentialofwesterncivilization,havingshapedthewesterncivilizationmoredecisivelythananythingelseeverwritten.AlmostallgreatauthorsofBiblicalthemeshavebeenaliterarytradition.InfactfewgreatEnglishwritersoftheseventeenth,eighteenthandnineteenthcenturycanbereadandappreciatedwithsatisfactionwithoutasufficientknowledgeoftheBible.InCharlotteBronte'
