Abstract
RFIDcanautomaticallyidentifymulti-targetandmovingtargetinnon-contactmethod.thereareanincreasingnumberofretailers,banks,trafficmanagements,exhibitionsandlogisticproviderspracticingthisnewtechnologytotheirproductsandservices.Therefore,itbringsbothopportunitiesandchallengestoRFIDresearchers.Thisarticlebrieflyintroducedcomponent,principleandcharacteristicoftheRFIDtechnology.InthispaperwecomparedRFIDandthetraditionalbarcode,andthenprovideabriefsurveyonRFIDapplications.

Introduction
Radiofrequencyidentification(RFID)isanewidentificationtechnology.RFIDhasagreaternumberofbenefitsthanitspredecessor,thebarcode.Itisnotuniversallyadoptedinmanyindustriesduetoitshighcosthitherto.However,RFIDisunmatchedadvancedbecauseitdoesnotrequiresightscanning,itactstoreducelaborlevels,enhances"visibility,andimprovesinventorymanagement.
ThepopularizationofRFID(RadioFrequencyIdentification)providesasolutionofthelocation/tracingofhumanorobjects.RFIDlocationandtracingsystem,measuresthespacelocationofobjectbasedonuniqueidentificationtagandsignalintensityofRFcommunicationbetweenreaderandtaginobject,mainlyapplytoindoorlocation,whichGPSsystemisnotsuitablefor.
RFID,anon-contactautomaticidentificationtechnologybasedon“RadioFrequency”,automaticallyidentifystatic/movingobject/human.RFIDtag,aspecialmicrochip,implantedincommodity,cantraceandmanagephysicalobject,isanimportantmeansoflogisticsmanagementinformatizationandtracinginformatization.
ThecomponentofRFIDsystemincluding:

implantedinobjecttobeidentified.

WiththegrowingmaturityofRFIDtechnologyandthedropinpriceofRFIDtags,RFIDattractsincreasinginterestsfrombothindustryandacademic.ByattachingRFIDtagsonobjects,onecouldkeeptrackonandmanagethoseobjects.Thistechnologygraduallyreplacescurrentwidelyadoptedbarcodesystems.
2.1.RFIDTagandBarcode
Barcodeiswidelyadoptedforgoodsandobjectidentification.Onecouldfindbarcodeoneverypackagediteminsupermarkets.ZebraCompanyisoneoftheleadingbarcodeprovidersandprovideson-demandspecialtydigitalprintingandautomaticidentificationsolutionsinmorethan100countriesaroundtheworld.Abouttwentyyearsago,thecompanymainlyproducedthestandardlabels.NowZebraalsomovestoRFIDbusiness.Fromtheapplicationpointofview,barcodeandRFIDshareasimilarmarket,especiallyinretailaspect.WillRFIDreplacebarcode?
Fromconceptualpointofview,RFIDtagandbarcodearealsosimilar.Bothofthemtargettofacilitategoodsmanagementbyprovidinganeasytofetchidentificationcode.Therearetwomajordifferencesbetweenthem,barcodeisread-onlyandmustbeinline-of-sightfromthereader.Comparingwithbarcode.RFIDisabletotransmitdatabyradiofrequencyandalterdatastoredontheRFIDtagchip.Thislongrangeandnon-contactoperationallowsautomationtoreducemanpowerrequirement.ThemostimportantadvancementofRFIDoverbarcodeisthatitallowsidentificationofindividualitemfromagroupofsametypeproducts.RFIDalsoprovidesreal-timetraceabilityenvironmentforindividualitemthroughallprocessinthesupplychain.Owingtothesefeatures,RFIDreducesthecostforwarehouse,distributionandinventory.Thisdirectlybringsmoreprofittocompaniesandimprovescustomerserviceremarkably.
2.2.DevelopmentofRFIDStandard
EnterprisesgraduallyrealizethegreatbusinessopportunitiescreatedbyRFIDproductsandservices.MajordevelopmentsofRFIDtechnologiesarelocatedatUSA,Japan,KoreaandChina.Forexamples,Wal-Mart,theinternationaldepartmentoftheUnitedStates,theUnitedStatesFoodandDrugAdministrationhavepromotedthedevelopmentofRFID.AsuccessfulexampleisWal-Mart.TheyreplacedsomebarcodesbyRFIDproductswhichsavedUS$6.7billionbarcodecost,US$0.6billionstoragecostandUS$0.57billionmissingandtheftcost.However,RFIDdoesnothaveasingleglobalstandardyet.USAisdevelopingitsRFIDstandardforbothhardwareandapplicationareas.TheRFIDstandardofEuropeanmainlyfollowstheUSAstandard.
