AlittleearlierthantheChinese,theancientGreeksknewofotherobjectssuchasamber,thatwhenrubbedwithfurwouldcauseasimilarinvisibleattractionbetweenthetwo.Thiswasalsofirststudiedrigorouslyinthe17thcentury,andcametobecalledelectricity.Thus,physicshadcometounderstandtwoobservationsofnatureintermsofsomerootcause(electricityandmagnetism).However,furtherworkinthe19thcenturyrevealedthatthesetwoforceswerejusttwodifferentaspectsofoneforce–electromagnetism.Thisprocessof"
unifying"
forcescontinuestoday.
Thescientificmethod
Physicistsusethescientificmethodtotestthevalidity(认可)ofaphysicaltheory,usingamethodicalapproachtocomparetheimplicationsofthetheoryinquestionwiththeassociatedconclusionsdrawnfromexperimentsandobservationsconductedtotestit.Experimentsandobservationsaretobecollectedandmatchedwith(与…一致)thepredictionsandhypotheses(假定)madebyatheory,thusaidinginthedeterminationorthevalidity/invalidityofthetheory.
Theorieswhichareverywellsupportedbydataandhaveneverfailedanycompetentempirical(以实验为依据的)testareoftencalledscientificlaws,ornaturallaws.Ofcourse,alltheories,includingthosecalledscientificlaws,canalwaysbereplacedbymoreaccurate,generalizedstatementsifadisagreementoftheorywithobserveddataiseverfound.
Theoryandexperiment
Thecultureofphysicshasahigherdegreeofseparationbetweentheoryandexperimentthanmanyothersciences.Sincethetwentiethcentury,mostindividualphysicistshavespecializedineithertheoreticalphysicsorexperimentalphysics.Incontrast,almostallthesuccessfultheoristsinbiologyandchemistry(e.g.AmericanquantumchemistandbiochemistLinusPauling)havealsobeenexperimentalists,althoughthisischangingasoflate.
Theoristsseektodevelopmathematicalmodelsthatbothagreewithexistingexperimentsandsuccessfullypredictfutureresults,whileexperimentalistsdeviseandperformexperimentstotesttheoreticalpredictionsandexplorenewphenomena.Althoughtheoryandexperimentaredevelopedseparately,theyarestronglydependentuponeachother.Progressinphysicsfrequentlycomesaboutwhenexperimentalistsmakeadiscoverythatexistingtheoriescannotexplain,orwhennewtheoriesgenerateexperimentallytestablepredictions,whichinspirenewexperiments.
Itisalsoworthnotingtherearesomephysicistswhoworkattheinterplay(相互作用)oftheoryandexperimentwhoarecalledphenomenologists.Phenomenologistslookatthecomplexphenomenaobservedinexperimentandworktorelatethemtofundamentaltheory.
Theoreticalphysicshashistoricallytakeninspirationfromphilosophy;
electromagnetismwasunifiedthisway.Beyondtheknownuniverse,thefieldoftheoreticalphysicsalsodealswithhypotheticalissues,suchasparalleluniverses(平行宇宙),amultiverse(多元宇宙),andhigherdimensions(多维时空).Theoristsinvoketheseideasinhopesofsolvingparticularproblemswithexistingtheories.Theythenexploretheconsequencesoftheseideasandworktowardmakingtestablepredictions.
