In1911MahfouzwasborninCairo,Egypt,theyoungestofsevenchildreninalowermiddle-classfamily.HisfatherwasastrictMuslimandhewasraisedinastrongreligiousatmosphere.HeearnedanundergraduatedegreeinphilosophyfromtheUniversityofFuad(nowCairoUniversity)in1934.
Althoughhisfirstshortstorywaspublishedin1932,Mahfouzdidnotdecidetobecomeawriteruntiltwoyearsaftergraduatingfromcollege.HealsomaintainedacareerasanEgyptianbureaucrat.HisfirstpositionwasintheMinistryofWaqfs,thebodyoverseeingpiousMuslimfoundations.
16ofhisnovelshavebeenadaptedforfilmsandhisproseworkshavebeencomparedinspiritandtonetothesocialrealismofBalzacandDickens.HismostfamousworkTheCairoTrilogy(1957)isasequenceofnovelsthatdescribesthe
