AccordingtoanewanalysispublishedintheLancet,morethan3.2millionpeoplesuffereddeathsfromairpollutionin2010,thelargestnumberonrecord.That’supfrom800,000in2000.Andit’saregionalproblem:

Itistheveryfinestsoot–sosmallthatitrootsdeepwithinthelungsandfromtheentersthebloodstream–thatcontributestomostofthepublic–healthtollofairpollutionincludingdeath.Dieselsoot,whichcanalsocausecancer,isamajorproblembecauseitisconcentratedincitiesalongtransportationzonesaffectingoverpopulatedareas.Itisthoughttocontributetohalfthedeathsfromairpollutioninurbancenters.Forexample,1in6peopleintheU.S.livenearadiesel–pollutionhotspotlikearailyard,portterminalorfreeway.
