Formanyyears,themajorityofIrishpeopleearnedtheirlivingasfarmers.Today,manypeoplestillworkonthelandbutmoreandmorepeoplearemovingtothecitiestoworkinfactoriesandoffices.Lifeinthecitiesisverydifferentfromlifeinthecountryside,wherethingsmoveataquieterandslowerpace.

TheyearsbetweentheFirstandSecondWorldWarswereyearsofprogressandgrowingdevelopment.FinlandisthefifthlargestcountryinEurope,anddespitearelativelysmallpopulationof5.2million,themarketpotentialismuchgreater.Finlandhasnocoaloroil,andthenation’swealthliesinthetimber(木材)fromitsforests,whichsuppliesmaterialforpaperandfurnituremaking,andintheelectricpowerfromitswater.FinlandisanexcellentgatewaytotradewithRussiaandtheBalticStatesbecauseofalonghistoryoftradingwiththesemarkets.Finlandhasalsoenjoyedastrongandlong-standingtradingrelationshipwithBritain,arelationshipwhichwasfurtherstrengthenedbyFinland’saccession(加入)totheEuropeanUnioninJanuary1995.
