Mostsnakesaren’tpoisonous.Afewexceptionsincludetherattlesnake,coralsnake,watermoccasinandcopperhead.Mostpoisonoussnakeshaveslit-likeeyes.Theirheadsaretriangular,withadepressionorpitmidwaybetweentheeyesandnostrils.
Othercharacteristicsuniquetocertainpoisonoussnakes:
Rattlesnakesmakearattlingsoundbyshakingtheringsattheendoftheirtails.
Watermoccasinshaveawhite,cottonyliningintheirmouths.
Coralsnakeshavered,yellowandblackringsalongthelengthoftheirbodies.
Toreduceyourriskofsnakebites,avoidpickinguporplayingwithanysnakeunlessyou’reproperlytrained.Mostsnakesusuallyavoidpeopleifpossibleandbiteonlywhenthreatenedorsurprised.

●Drinkingalcoholwhileeating.

Youngchildrentendtoputintotheirmouthsalmostanythingthatfits,sochokingcanoccurunassociatedwithameal.
Panicaccompanieschoking.Thechokingvictim’sfaceoftenassumesanexpressionoffearorterror.Atfirstthevictimmayturnpurple,theeyesmaybulge,andheorshemaywheezeorgasp.
Ifthepersoncancoughfreely,hasnormalskincolorandcanspeak,heorsheisnotchoking.Ifthecoughismorelikeagaspandthepersonisturningblue,heorsheisprobablychoking.Ifindoubt,askthechokingpersonifheorshecantalk.Ifthepersoncanspeak,thenthewindpipeisnotcompletelyblockedandoxygenisreachingthelungs.Ifchokingisoccurring,begintoperformtheHeimlichmaneuver.
