艾丽斯·沃克是当代美国文坛著名的黑人女作家。
她的著作《紫色》讲述了南方黑人女孩西莉的女性意识如何逐渐觉醒以及她如何追求独立进而获得解放的过程。
本论文探讨的是《紫色》这部小说中的女主人公西莉不断的追求女性自我意识并最后实现自我价值的过程。
尽管生活充满坎坷,西莉却从没有放弃过她对追求女性意识的觉醒,最终她成功实现了自我价值。
本文从历史角度及女性主义入手,分析一个生长在美国南方的黑人妇女西莉,写信给上帝去讲诉她作为女儿、妻子、姐姐、妈妈的角色的一生。
同时,介绍了几个影响她一生的黑人妇女。
第一个是莎格·埃佛里,一位布鲁斯歌手,同时也是她丈夫的情人,最后成为了她的拯救者;第二个是聂蒂,西莉的妹妹,她是一个非洲的传教士,在西莉认识到上帝不可能真正走入她的生活中后,她不但是西莉的精神寄托,而且还是西莉的希望,因为她是西莉的两个孩子的监护人;第三个是索非亚,她的儿媳,意志坚定,一直激励着她。
最后,她终于摆脱了一直困扰她的那些烦恼。
通过对生活的不断认识,以及周围的几个女人对她的影响,找到了一个真实的自我,完全拥有了自己的工作。
在西莉女性意识觉醒的过程中,她身上有一种乐观主义精神。
正是这种乐观精神和努力让西莉成功完成了她女性意识的觉醒。

TheColorPurple(1982),writtenbythefamousAfro-AmericanfemalewriterAliceWalker(1944-),wonthePulitzerPrizeforfictionin1983.SheisthefirstAfro-Americanwomanwhothisaward.Thenovelwasadoptedforfilmin1984bySpielbergandthisadaptationbroughtinthesmallruraltownofEatonton,GeorgiaonFebruary9,1944.ShewastheeighthandlastchildofWillieLeeWalkerandMinnieTallulahGrant,twosharecroppers.Herparents’experienceswiththeoppressivesharecroppingsystemandtheracismoftheAmericanSouthon1965,WalkerwasinvolvedinCivilRightsMovementfollowing,whichinfluenced(1976)andTheColorPurple.SheevenmarriedaJewishCivilRightslawyer,MelLeventhal.Anothermovementthatinfluenced’sLiberationMovementwhichsheregardedaswhitewomen’smovement.Shebecameinterestedintheconditionsofblackwomenwhosufferedthedoubleoppression---racismandsexism.Thelattercamefromwhitemen,evenfromblackmen.Sherealizedthenecessityforthemtoachievefreedom.SotheconcernofblackwomenandtheimpactofracismandsexismonthembecamethemajorthemesofWalker’snovels.Sheendeavoredtoexploreanidealwayforblackwomentofightagainstracialandsexualdiscriminationandtoestablishtheiridentity.Asaresult,shewrote’ssexualabuseandprejudiceagainstfemaleblacks.
1.2AboutTheColorPurple
TheColorPurpleisanepistolarynovel.Itconsistsof90letters,ofwhichovertwothirds(61innumber)CeliewrotetoGod,14toCelie’slife,withNettie’sAfricanadventure.Thetimeframeofthenovelcoversoverthirtyyears,andCelieisnowinmiddleage,inwhoweretakenawayfrom.LaterCelie’sletters).Themanabusedevildesiretoawayandfoundpeaceworkingforamissionaryfamilyandtakingcareoftheirtwochildren,AdamandOlivia.CelieneverthemeantimeCelietakescareofandenduresaAmericansinger,fallsillandisbroughtoverforbondwellwithoneanother,andShugteachesCelietoloveandstandupforshelearnsthatFonsowastheirbusiness.AfterFonsodies,Celiecomesintothepropertythatisrightfullyslope.Helosesalcoholic,andalmostdies.Hesurvives,becomesfriendswithCelie,andfinealltheyears,marriedtothemissionaryaftershelearnsthatthemissionary’stwochildrenareadopted,andareinfactCelie’sbloodandflesh.TheycomebackfromAfricaandreunitewithCelie.
ManypeopleabroadareinterestedinAliceWalkerand.”(MelWatkins,1970:
165)DinitiaSmithsuggeststhatthenovelmarksamajoradvanceforWalker’sart:
“becausethebookissuperb,itplacesthecompanyofFaulkner,fromwhomsheappearstonarrator,forinstance,andthepresentationofacomplexstoryfromanaïvepointofview.”ThesepositiveremarksrevealthatTheColorPurpleisprobablyWalker’smostartisticallymatureworkwhichtranscendstheboundariesofthefemalegendertoembracemoreuniversalconcernsaboutindividualautonomyandself-reliance.
SimilartotheforeignscholarsandwiththepassionforAmericanminorityliterature,moreandmoreChinesecriticsandscholarsshowgreatinterestinAliceWalkerandassertsin“TheColorPurpleandAliceWalker’sWomanism”(LiuYuan,2006:
243)thatthenovelgivesafullexpressionoftheideologicalemotionoffeminismandavividdescriptionofblackwomen’sstruggleforliberationandequality.In“ThePatternofChanginAliceWalker(LiuYuan,2006:
223)”,LiuYingarguesthatthepatternchangeinAliceWalker’smustundergotoachievetheirvision.
2.CulturalandHistoricalBackground
2.1Feminism
Feminismisadiscoursewhichinvolvesvariousmovements,theories,andphilosophieswhichareconcernedwiththeissueofgenderdifference.Itadvocatesequalityforwomenandcampaignsforwomen’srightsandinterests.Apartfromthecriticismofsocialrelationship,manyfeministsalsoemphasizetheanalysisoftheinequalitybetweenmenandwomenandthepromotionofwomen’sbenefits.Feministtheoryaimsatknowingtheessenceofinequalityandstressingongenderpoliticsandsexuality.Theexploringthemeoffeminismincludesdiscrimination,stereotypedimage,andmaterializationofsex,,oppressionandpaternity.
FeminismoriginatedintheWest.Itwasregardedasatheoreticalandpoliticalmovementwhichtookwomen’sexperienceasitssourceandmotivation.ThewordfeminismfirstappearedinFranceandmeantwomen’sliberation.ThenitspreadtoBritainandAmericaandgraduallybecamepopular.Atthebeginning,themovementpursuedtheequalitybetweenmenandwomen.Therighttovotewasthefirstandforemost.During1920sand1930s,themajorityofthewomeninwesterncountriesgainedequalpoliticalrights.However,insociallifeandpeople’ssense,womenwerestillinaninferiorposition.Sothefeministbegantorealizethattherelayaproblemofgenderrelationsandpower.Therefore,feminismmovementturnedintotheanalysisofpowerstructureandtheoriginofinequalitybetweenmenandwomen.Feminismisthecombinationoftheoryandpractice.It’sakindofbeliefandideologyaimingateliminatingallinequalityincludingsexualdiscrimination.
Themovementoffeminismisdividedintothreephases.Thefirstgenerationstartedin1850sandcontinuedtothebeginningof20thcentury.ThesecondphasewhichwascalledModernFeminismlastedtill1960s.PostModernFeminismdevelopinguptonow.ThefirstgenerationoffeminismderivedfromtheFrenchRevolutionandtheEnlightenment.TherepresentativefigurewasHarrietTylerMillfromEngland.Theprimaryappealofthemovementwaswomen’sequalrightsineducation,legislationandeconomy.Thefeministsmainlycalledforwomen’sliberationfromeconomicaspect.Theirachievementslaterfeminism,especiallytheMarxistorSocialistFeminism.LeoTolstoy’sAnnaKalielinnawastherepresentativeliteratureoft
