Nowthisgroupwillprobablystartgettingalittlepuffedupaboutthis,humannaturebeingwhatitis.Theymaytrytobemodest,butatcocktailpartiestheywilloccasionallyadmittoattractivemembersoftheoppositesexwhattheirtechniqueis,andwhatmarvelousinsightstheybringtothefieldofflipping.
Assumingthatthewinnersaregettingtheappropriaterewardsfromthelosers,inanothertendayswewillhave215peoplewhohavesuccessfullycalledtheircoinflips20timesinarowandwho,bythisexercise,eachhaveturnedonedollarintoalittleover$1million.$225millionwouldhavebeenlost,$225millionwouldhavebeenwon.
Bythen,thisgroupwillreallylosetheirheads.Theywillprobablywritebookson“HowIturnedaDollarintoaMillioninTwentyDaysWorkingThirtySecondsaMorning.”Worseyet,they'llprobablystartjettingaroundthecountryattendingseminarsonefficientcoinflippingandtacklingskepticalprofessorswith,“Ifitcan'tbedone,whyarethere215ofus?
”
”
Bythensomebusinessschoolprofessorwillprobablyberudeenoughtobringupthefactthatif225millionorangutanshadengagedinasimilarexercise,theresultswouldbemuchthesame215egotisticalorangutanswith20straightwinningflips.
Iwouldargue,however,thattherearesomeimportantdifferencesintheexamplesIamgoingtopresent.Foronething,if(a)youhadtaken225millionorangutansdistributedroughlyastheU.S.populationis;if(b)215winnerswereleftafter20days;andif(c)youfoundthat40camefromaparticularzooinOmaha,youwouldbeprettysureyouwereontosomething.Soyouwouldprobablygooutandaskthezookeeperaboutwhathe'sfeedingthem,whethertheyhadspecialexercises,whatbookstheyread,andwhoknowswhatelse.Thatis,ifyoufoundanyreallyextraordinaryconcentrationsofsuccess,youmightwanttoseeifyoucouldidentifyconcentrationsofunusualcharacteristicsthatmightbecausalfactors.
Scientificinquirynaturallyfollowssuchapattern.Ifyouweretryingtoanalyzepossiblecausesofararetypeofcancer——with,say,1,500casesayearintheUnitedStates——andyoufoundthat400ofthemoccurredinsomelittleminingtowninMontana,youwouldgetveryinterestedinthewaterthere,ortheoccupationofthoseafflicted,orothervariables.Youknowit'snotrandomchancethat400comefromasmallarea.Youwouldnotnecessarilyknowthecausalfactors,butyouwouldknowwheretosearch.
Isubmittoyouthattherearewaysofdefininganoriginotherthangeography.Inadditiontogeographicalorigins,therecanbewhatIcallanintellectualorigin.IthinkyouwillfindthatadisproportionatenumberofsuccessfulcoinflippersintheinvestmentworldcamefromaverysmallintellectualvillagethatcouldbecalledGrahamandDoddsville.Aconcentrationofwinnersthatsimplycannotbeexplainedbychancecanbetracedtothisparticularintellectualvillage.
Conditionscouldexistthatwouldmakeeventhatconcentrationunimportant.Perhaps100peopleweresimplyimitatingthecoinflippingcallofsometerriblypersuasivepersonality.Whenhecalledheads,100followersautomaticallycalledthatcointhesameway.Iftheleaderwaspartofthe215leftattheend,thefactthat100camefromthesameintellectualoriginwouldmeannothing.Youwouldsimplybeidentifyingonecaseasahundredcases.Similarly,let'sassumethatyoulivedinastronglypatriarchalsocietyandeveryfamilyintheUnitedStatesconvenientlyconsistedoftenmembers.Furtherassumethatthepatriarchalculturewassostrongthat,whenthe225millionpeoplewentoutthefirstday,everymemberofthefamilyidentifiedwiththefather'scall.Now,attheendofthe20dayperiod,youwouldhave215winners,andyouwouldfindthattheycamefromonly21.5families.Somenaivetypesmightsaythatthisindicatesanenormoushereditaryfactorasanexplanationofsuccessfulcoinflipping.But,ofcourse,itwouldhavenosignificanceatallbecauseitwouldsimplymeanthatyoudidn'thave215individualwinners,butrather21.5randomlydistributedfamilieswhowerewinners.
InthisgroupofsuccessfulinvestorsthatIwanttoconsider,therehasbeenacommonintellectualpatriarch,BenGraham.Butthechildrenwholeftthehouseofthisintellectualpatriarchhavecalledtheir“flips”inverydifferentways.Theyhavegonetodifferentplacesandboughtandsolddifferentstocksandcompanies,yettheyhavehadacombinedrecordthatsimplycannotbeexplainedbythefactthattheyareallcallingflipsidenticallybecausealeaderissignalingthecallsforthemtomake.Thepatriarchhasmerelysetforththeintellectualtheoryformakingcoincallingdecisions,buteachstudenthasdecidedonhisownmannerofapplyingthetheory.
