Goodmorning,everyone.Today’slectureisaboutthepopularityofEnglish.Asweallknow,Englishiswidelyusedintheworld.AlthoughEnglishisnotthelanguagewiththelargestnumberofnativeorfirstlanguagespeakers,ithasreallybecomealinguafranca.Thenwhatisalinguafranca?
Thetermreferstoalanguagewhichiswidelyadoptedforcommunicationbetweentwospeakerswhosenativelanguagesaredifferentfromeachother’s,andwhereoneorbothspeakersareusingitasasecondlanguage.Forexample,whenanIndiantalkstoaSingaporeanusingEnglish,thenEnglishisthelinguafranca.ThenactuallyhowmanypeoplespeakEnglishaseitherafirstorasecondlanguage?
Someresearcherssuggestedafewyearsagothatbetween320-380millionpeoplespokeEnglishasafirstlanguage,andanywaybetween250-350millionasasecondlanguage.Andofcourse,ifweincludepeoplewhoarelearningEnglishasaforeignlanguageallovertheworld,thatnumbermayincreasedramatically.Thenwemayaskaquestion:

ThereareinfactanumberofinterlockingreasonsforthepopularityofEnglishasalinguafranca.Manyofthereasonsarehistorical,buttheyalsoincludeeconomicandculturalfactorsthathaveinfluencedandsustainedthespreadofthelanguage.Let’sgothroughthereasonsonebyone.
Firstisthehistoricalreason.Thisisrelatedtothecolonialhistory.Asweknow,whenthePilgrimFatherslandedontheMassachusettscoastin1620aftertheirjourneyfromEngland,theybroughtwiththemnotjustasetofreligiousbeliefs,apioneeringspiritoradesireforcolonization,butalsotheirlanguage.Althoughmanyyearslater,theAmericansbrokeawayfromtheircolonialmaster,thelanguageofEnglishremainedandstilldoes.ItwasthesameinAustralia,too.WhenCommanderPhillipplantedtheBritishflaginSydneycoveonthe26thJanuary,1788,itwasnotjustabunchofBritishconvictsontheirguardians,butalsoalanguage.InotherpartsoftheformerBritishEmpire,Englishrapidlybecameaunifyingordominatingmeansofcontrol.Forexample,itbecamealinguafrancainIndiaoravarietyofindigenouslanguagesmadetheuseofanyoneofthemasawholecountrysystemproblematic.SotheimpositionofEnglishastheonelanguageofadministrationhelpsmaintainthecolonizers’controlandpower,thusEnglishtraveledaroundmanypartsoftheworldinthosedays.Andlongafterthatcolonialpowerhasfadedaway,itisstillwidelyusedasamainoratleastaninstitutionallanguageincountriesasfarapartasJamaicaandPakistan,UgandaandNewZealand.Thatisthefirstfactor.
NowthesecondmajorfactorinthespreadofEnglishhasbeenthespreadofcommercethroughouttheworld.ThespreadofinternationalcommercehastakenEnglishalongwithit.Thisisthe20thcenturyphenomenonofglobalization.Therefore,oneofthefirstsightsmanytravelersseewhenarrivingincountriesasdiverseasBrazil,China,forexample,istheyellowtwinarchsignofMacDonald’sfastfoodrestaurantorsomeotherfamousbrandsoutletsAndwithoutdoubt,Englishisusedasthelanguageofcommunicationintheinternationalbusinesscommunity.intheinternationalbusinesscommunity.
AndthethirdfactorrelatedtothepopularuseofEnglishistheboominginternationaltravel.AndyouwillfindthatmuchtravelandtourismiscarriedonaroundtheworldinEnglish.Ofcoursethisisnotalwaysthecase,asthemulti-lingualismofmanytourismworkersinmanydifferentcountriesdemonstrate.ButavisittomostairportsontheglobewillshowsignsnotonlyinthelanguageofthatcountrybutalsowithEnglish,justasmanyairlineannouncementsbroadcastinEnglishtoo,whateverthelanguageofthecountrytheairportissituatedin.
Sofar,Englishisalsothepreferredlanguageofairtrafficcontrolinmanycountriesandisusedwidelyinseatravelcommunication.Anotherfactorhassomethingtodowithinformationexchangearoundtheworld.Asweallknow,agreatdealofacademicdiscourse
aroundtheworldtakesplaceinEnglish.Itisoftenalinguafrancaofconferences,forexample,andmanyjournalarticlesinfieldsasdiverseasastronomy,triopsychologyandgeologyhaveEnglishasakindofdefaultlanguage.
ThelastfactorIcitehereconcernspopularculture.Inthewesternworld,atleastEnglishisadominatinglanguageinpopularculture.PopmusicinEnglishcanbeheardonmanyradios,thusmanypeoplewhoarenotEnglishspeakerscansingwordsfromtheirfavoriteEnglishmediumsongs.Andmanypeoplewhoareregularcinema-goersorTVviewerscanfrequentlyhearEnglishinsubtitlefilmscomingoutoftheUSA.
