YouareabouttomeetoneofthemenwhoshotOsamabinLaden.MarkOwenrecentlylefttheNavy'selitecounterterrorismunit,SEALTeam6.MarkOwenisnothisrealname.ItisthenamethatheusedtowriteanewbookabouttheassaultonbinLaden'scompoundcalled"NoEasyDay."Owenwasonthehelicopterthatcrashedintothecompound.HewasthesecondmaninbinLaden'sbedroom.Andhetookthepicturesofthebodythattheworldhasneverseen.
OwenreceivedaSilverStarforvalorandaPurpleHeartforawoundsufferedintheraid.But,despiteallthat,Owentoldus,inhisonlyinterview,that"NoEasyDay"isnotabouthim.Hesaysit'satributetothehundredsofAmericanswhogatheredintelligence,plannedandtrainedinthe10-yearpursuitoftheworld'smostwantedman.SEALTeam6,hetoldus,justtookcareofthelast40minutes.

We'veneverheardthestoryfromsomeonewhowasthere.Theraid,May1st,2011,hadbeenyearsinthemaking.But,inthemoment,thebestlaidplansfailedleavingasmallteamofAmericanstoimprovisevictoryfromneardisaster.

InApril2011,theyhadjustreturnedfromAfghanistanwhentheyweretoldtoreporttoNorthCarolinaforanexercise.
Owenwalkedintoatop-secretbriefingroom,sawamodelofacompound,andheardthisfromhisbuddies:

RaidslikethiswerecommonmanynightsinAfghanistanandIraq.And,lookingatthemodel,theSEALsdidn'tthinkofthisasparticularlychallenging.Thetrickypartwasgettingthere.TheU.S.wasn'ttellingPakistan.So,thehelicopterscouldbeshotdownbyPakistan'smodernairdefenses.ThepilotswerefromtheArmy's160thSpecialOperationsAviationRegiment.TwomodifiedBlackHawks,callsigns"ChalkOne"and"ChalkTwo,"woulddrop24SEALsandaBelgianMalinoiscombatdognamedCairo.
MarkOwen:
ChalkOne,whichistheoneIwason,wasgoingtohoveroverthecompoundhere.Wewoulddropthetwofastropes,slidedowntheropesintothecourtyardhere,andthengoaboutourbusinesswhileChalkTwowouldlandouthere.Justoverherebytheroad.Droptheexternalcontainmentteamoff.Theywouldprovidesecurityexternal.We'dhavetwomenandourcombatassaultdogwoulddoaquickpatroloftheperimeterdowntothesouthandaroundtomakesurethattherewasnotunnelsunderneaththewallsifsomebodydidhearuscomeinandhadtimetoescape.Afterdroppingthoseguysoff,thesecondhelowasgoingtocomeup,hoveroverthethirdfloor,dropofftheremainingguys.Theywouldthenhoprightdownintothebalcony,assaultingfromthetopdownandourguyswouldassaultfromthebottomup.
Afewdaysaftergettingthemission,theyhadtheirplanandsobeganweeksofrehearsalsonafull-sizeversionofthecompoundbuiltinNorthCarolina.
