ManystudentsofAmericanhistoryareconfusedbythemid-nineteenthcenturyperiod,findingitdifficulttounderstandorrelatetowhatlifewaslikeduringthosedecades.Tomanyitisanebulousuncertainperiodbetweenmajorhistoricalconflicts.SandwichedbetweentheRevolutionaryWar,Warof1812,andtheimpendingCivilWar,littleseemedtohappenofsignificanceotherthanagrowthinterritoryandavoidanceofdisunion.Changeappearedtobehappeningunderthesurface,butitdidnothavetheobviousandenormoussocialandpoliticalupheavaloftheCivilWarandlaterGildedAge.However,thisperiodmarkedablossomingofAmericanart,thoughtandphilosophy,andnowhereisthatmoreapparentthanintheTranscendentalistperiodfromthe1830sto1870s.TheobjectiveofthisunitistoallowstudentstounderstandthemajorphilosophicalTranscendentalistthinkingatthetime,andtorelateittothemselvesandtheirexperiencelocally.Transcendentalismisasomewhatscaryterm,butstudentswillrecognizemanyofitsmajorideasintheirownlives.Thewritings,philosophies,andmaterialareintricate,richanddifficulttoabsorb,butsoarethelessonsandlifeexperiencestheygothrough.Muchofthethoughtsofthatperiodstillresonatestronglytoday,andgoalongwayinexplainingwhatitistobeAmerican.
Thefirstsetoflessonswillprovideabackgroundtotranscendentalismfromasocialandhistoricperspectivesothatstudentscanidentifyitscharacteristics,andgainabasicframeworkofitsinfluenceatthetime.ThenextlessonswillintroduceJournalingtopromotestudentreflectionandwritingabouttheirexperienceswithnature.Thelastsetoflessonswillexamineindividualismversussocietalresponsibility,howthisisreflectedinThoreau’s“CivilDisobedience”,andotherhistoricaldevelopmentsfromitslegacy.
