DuringtheWorldWarOne,thepoorsoldierGatsbyfellinlovewithanupperclassgirlnamedDaisy.Butduetothewidegapbetweenthem,DaisydecidedtomarryTom,amanofherclass,insteadofGatsby.Broken-heartedGatsbythenheldtheconvictionthatmoneywasofthegreatestimportance.Hestronglybelievedinthe‘Americandreams’,whichasweallknow,advocatesthatonecanachievewhateverheorshelikesthroughcontinuousefforts.HestrivedforfiveyearstobecomeamillionaireandboughtavillanearDaisy’stoattracther.HewastooaddictedtohisfantasytorealizethatDaisywasnolongerthelovelygirlsheusedtobe.Eventually,hewaskilledbecauseofhercrime.
Afterreadingit,somethingreverberatesinmyheart.Ican’thelpthinkingofthethemeFitzgeraldtryingtoconvey.Onethingmaybethelonelyvoidofpeople’sspiritualworld.Iamdeeplyimpressedbychapter3,whereavividdescriptionofapartyisgiven.Therewerebeautifulgirls,drunkmen,andboisterouscrowdsthere,butnoneofthemperceivedthepointlessoftheirlivesandthebarrenoftheirminds.Toseethisphenomenondeeper,thereweretwocircumstancesunderlyingit.Thefirstisthelackofdreams.Somepeople,especiallythepeopleoftheupperclass,livedanaimlesslife.Theywastedtheirtimeandmoneyandtookanindifferentattitudetowardslife.Theychasedfortemporaryecstasybutlosttheiridentityineternity,namelyDaisyandTom.Thesecondisthemisleadingofdreams.SomeotherslikeGatsby,bravelypursuedtheirdreams,yetgoingtoadivergedwayunconsciously.Theymightmixuptheconceptofaricherlifeandahappierlife,viewingahighersocialstateandapeacefulfulfilledlifeasequality.Unfortunately,whentheywerebusychasingtheirdreams,everythingchangedwithtime.Whentheywereanxiousabouttheto-gets,theyignoredwhattheyhadalreadyhadandlostthealerttotheconstantchanges.Theexcellentuseofsymbolizationillustratesthisideaperfectly.Theimageryof‘greenlight’isthemostimportantsymblewhichoccurredthreetimesinthenovel.Thegreen-light’sobscureinthemistindicatesthedimofGatsby’sdreams.
AsfarasIamconcerned,thisstorycanserveasareminderforus.Toliveameaningfullife,weshouldcarefullychoosesomedreamstopursue.Andintheprocessoffulfillingourdreams,weshouldalwaysbeconciousaboutwhatwereallydesire.Anyhow,onlybypursuingtheproperdreamscanwefinallygettothedeepspringsofhappiness.

Inthenovel,GatsbywasborninapoorfamilyandfellinlovewithDaisywhenhewasyoung.However,hewasunabletomarryDaisybecauseofpoverty.TherealitymadeGatsbysfantasyinhisheartdisillusionedforthefirsttime.Daisyisaveryrealisticrichwoman,andsheimmediatelymarriedanotherrichbusinessmanTom.LaterGatsbybecameamillionairebyhisowneffortsandluck.Gatsbywasstillnostalgicforhisformerloverafterhemadehisfortune.HejustwantedtoseethegreenlightatDaisysWharfandsethishomebythesea.
Atthebeginningofthenovel,theauthorusesalotofinktodescribeGatsbyssceneofentertainingguestsandfriendsinthemansion,aswellashisfeelingsaftermeetingDaisyagain.AlthoughDaisyshusbandTomwasadamantagainstit,theywerestillrecklesslysweet.Justastheywereabouttowalktothe"happinessAvenue",Daisyaccidentallyhitapasser-bywhiledriving,whichresultedinthedeathofpassers-by.Theauthorsuseofsuchdramaticcolorsisreallyboastful.Gatsbywaswillingtogiveuphislifeandwealthfordaisy.Insharpcontrasttothis,DaisyandTomareselfishandindifferent.TheydeliberatelyexcusethemselvestogoawayfromhomeandblameGatsbyforalltheaccidents.Onceagain,therealitycoldlyshatteredhisillusoryandalmostnaivedream.
