Wearemovingthroughasmallairfieldfullofparkedlightplanes.Therearenopeoplearound.Wemovethroughtheclusterofplanestowardsahangarontheedgeofthefield.
INT.HANGAR–DAY
Wearestillmovingthroughlightplanes,butnowweareinsidethehangar.Someoftheplaneshavetheirenginecoversopen,partsstrewnaround.Othersarepartiallycoveredwithtarpsorhavesectionsmissing.Thereisevenasleekexecutivejetparkedinonecorner.
AswefloatpasttheplaneswenoticeawomanleaningagainstthewingofaPiperCub,herchestagainstthewingstrailingedge,herarmsspreadouttoeachside,asthoughflyingherself.Aswegetcloserweseethatherjacketispulledopentoexposeoneofherbreasts,whichrestsonthemetalofthewing.

Thecarhurtlesacrossthereservationand,bouncingandslammingdownonitssuspension,headsupthehigh-speedexitramp.ThreesedansarebarrelingdowntheramprighttowardsJames.

Jamespumpsthebrakesandsawsawayinexpertlyatthewheel.Hemanagestoavoidthefirsttwocars,butthethirdhestrikeshead-on.
Atthemomentofimpact,themaninthepassengerseatoftheothercarispropelledlikeaHastressfromthebarrelofacircuscannonthroughhisownwindshieldandthenpartiallythroughthewindshieldofJames'scar.
Thepropelledman'sbloodspattersJames'sfaceandchest,hisbodycomingtoresthalfinsideJames'scar,itsheaddanglingdownintothedarkrecessofthepassengerfootwell.
James'schesthitsthesteeringwheel,hiskneescrushintotheinstrumentpanel,hisforeheadhitstheupperwindshieldframe.Asthesethingshappen,Jamesisvaguelyconsciousofthesamethingshappeningtothewomandrivingtheothercar,asthoughsheisabizarremirrorimage.
Slammedbackintotheirseatsaftertheinitialimpact,Jamesandthewomanlookateachotherthroughtheshatteredwindshields,neitherabletomove.Thewoman,handsomeandintelligent-looking,supportedbyherseatbelt,staresatJamesinacuriouslyformalway,asifunsure
whathasbroughtthemtogether.
Outofthecornerofhiseye,Jamescanseethehandofthedeadpassenger,nowhispassenger,caughtonthedashboardandlyingpalmupwardsonlyafewinchesawayfromhim.Jamessquintsashetriestofocusonahugeblood-blister,pumpedupbytheman'sdyingcirculation,whichhasadistincttritonshape.
Jamesshiftshisfocustothehoodornamentofhiscar,twistedupintothecoldmercury-vaporglareoftheroadwaylightsbutstillintact.Itisthesametritonimprintedonthepalmofthedeadpassenger,thecarmanufacturer'slogo.

Trafficisbeginningtobackupbehindtheaccidentandagrowingcircleofspectators,someofthempedestrians,somedriverswhohavelefttheirowncars,beginstoform.
Themoreadventurousmembersofthecrowdpawhesitantlyattheseizeddoorsofthetwocars,afraidtoreallyyankthemopenincasetheviolenceofthatactmighttriggersomefurtherunnamedcatastrophe
