AFestivalfortheDeadisheldonceayearinJapan.Thisfestivalisacheerfuloccasion,foronthisday,thedeadaresaidtoreturntotheirhomesandtheyarewelcomedbytheliving.Astheyareexpectedtobehungryaftertheirlongjourney,foodislaidoutforthem.Specially-madelanternsarehungoutsideeachhousetohelpthedeadtofindtheirway.Allnightlong,peopledanceandsing.Intheearlymorning,thefoodthathadbeenlaidoutforthedeadisthrownintoariverorintotheseaasitisconsideredunluckyforanyonelivingtoeatit.Intownsthatarenearthesea,thetinylanternswhichhadbeenhunginthestreetsthenightbefore,areplacedintothewaterwhenthefestivalisover.Thousandsoflanternsslowlydriftouttoseaguidingthedeadontheirreturnjourneytotheotherworld.Thisisamovingspectacle,forcrowdsofpeoplestandontheshorewatchingthelanternsdriftingawayuntiltheycanbeseennomore.
