Somelanguageswereclearlyfasterthanothers.Butwhentheresearchersmultipliedthisratebythebitratetofindouthowmuchinformationwasmovedpersecond—theywereshockedbytheresults.Nomatterhowfastorslow,howsimpleorcomplex,eachlanguagegravitatedtowardanaveragerateof39.15bitspersecond.

Pellegrinoandhiscolleaguessuspectthattheanswerhaseverythingtodowiththelimitsimposedbyourfragilebiology—howmuchinformationourbrainscantakeinorproduceatanyonetime.
