Bornin1930,YuanLongpinggraduatedfromSouthwestAgriculturalCollegein1953.Sincethen,findingwaystogrowmorerice⑯hasbeenhislifegoal.Asayoungman,hesawthegreatneedforincreasingthericeoutput.Atthattime,hunger⑰wasadisturbing⑱probleminmanypartsofthecountryside.YuanLongpingsearchedforawaytoincreasericeharvestswithoutexpanding⑲theareaofthefields.In1950,Chinesefarmerscouldproduceaboutfiftysixmilliontonsofrice.Inarecentharvest,however,nearlytwohundredmilliontonsofricewasproduced.Theseincreasedharvests⑳meanthat22%oftheworld'speoplearefedfromjust7%ofthefarmlandintheworld.YuanLongpingisnowcirculating○21hisknowledgeinIndia,Vietnam○22andmanyotherlessdevelopedcountriestoincreasetheirriceharvests.Thanksto○23hisresearch,theUNhasmoretoolsinthebattle○24toridtheworldof○25hunger.Usinghishybridrice○26,farmersareproducingharveststwiceaslargeas○27before.
