Forcenturies,thegreatscientistsoftheworldstruggledtodevelopawaytolearnlongitude(经度).
Itseemedtothoseseekingtosolvethelongitudeproblemthattheonlysolutionwasinthemoonandstars.Duringthe17thcentury,Englishastronomersbeganamajorefforttomapthestarsandtheirrelationshiptothemoonasitpassedacrossthesky.RoyalAstronomerJohnFlamsteedworkedatthistaskforfortyyears.ThenextRoyalAstronomer,EdmundHalley,spentanotherfortyyearsgatheringinformationaboutthemoon'sorbit.In1766,RoyalAstronomerNevilMaskelynepublishedtheNauticalAlmanac(航海天文年历)andAstronomicalEphemeris(星历表).Itcontainedallthenecessaryinformationaboutthemoonandstarsthatsailorswouldneedtohelpthemlearntheirlongitude.Anavigatorhadtousecomplexobservinginstrumentstonotethepositionofthemoonandstars.ThenhehadtoseekthecorrectinformationintheNauticalAlmanacaboutthemoonandstarsatthattimeofnightorday.Thefinalstepintheprocesswastotakethemathematicalinformationfromthebook,linkittothecurrentinformationandsolvetheresultingproblem.Thistookanaverageoffourhourstodo.
Whilescientistswerestudyingthestarsandmoontosolvethelongitudeproblem,amannamedJohnHarrisonwasworkingonanotherproject.Hewastryingtobuildaclockthatwouldhelpsailorslearnlongitude.Hebegandevelopinghisclockin1730.Ittookfiveyearstocomplete.Severalyearslater,hebuiltasecondclock.Twentyyearslater,hecompletedadevicethatwassmallerthanthefirsttwo.Butstillhewasnotsatisfied.Twoyearslater,heproducedasmallclockthathecouldholdinhishand.Theclockcouldtellthecorrecttimeintwoplaces,meetingtherequirementsforlearninglongitudeonthesea.
