Hawaiians

astronomers,

Sadly,
all

not
wellwith
astronomy
in
Hawaii
today.
Protests
have
erupted
over
construction
of
the
Thirty
Meter
Telescope(TMT),
a
giant
observatory
that
promises
to
revolutionizehumanity
’sviewofthecosmos.
At
issue
is
the
TMT’s
planned
location
on
Mauna
Kea,
a
dormantvolcanoworshipedbysomeHawaiiansasthepiko,that
connectstheHawaiianIslandstotheheavens.ButMaunaKeais
also
home
to
some
of
the
world’smost
powerful
telescopes.
Rested
in
the
Pacific
Ocean,
Mauna
Kea’speak
rises
above
the
bulk
of
ourplanet’sdense
atmosphere,
where
conditions
allow
telescopestoobtainimagesofunsurpassedclarity.
OppositiontotelescopesonMaunaKeaisnothingnew.AsmallbutvocalgroupofHawaiiansandenvironmentshavelongviewed
theirpresenceasdisrespectforsacredlandandapainfulreminderoftheoccupationofwhatwasonceasovereignnation.

blame

controversy
