YuLizhong,chancellorofNewYorkUniversityShanghai,whereclassesareinEnglishandstudentsarerequiredtohaveahighstandardofEnglish,saidthemostimportantaspectofthereformlayinwhattotestandhowtotest.
“AsfarasIsee,thereformdoesn’tmeanEnglishisnolongerimportantforChinesestudentsafteritwillbeexcludedfromtheunifiedcollegeentranceexam,”Yusaid.“Inaway,Englishisevenmoreimportantthanbeforesincethetestwouldonlyserveasreference,whileeverycollegeanduniversity,eveneverymajor,canhavedifferentrequirementsofastudent’sEnglishskillsunderadiverseevaluationsystem.”
