如在古英语中,复数名词的所有格由词尾–a表示,在现代英语中这种语法手段全都消亡了。

2不平衡性
语言发展的不平衡性有两方面的含义:
一是指各种语言或方言发展速度是不平衡的,二是指同一种语言内部各要素的发展速度是不平衡的。
世界上的语言发展速度是不平衡的。
英语和德语都源于古日耳曼语,原来都是综合性语言。
古代英语名词有五个格,还有“性”的范畴,修饰名词的形容词也要随之变格,而现代英语中名词和形容词都不再变格,成为分析性语言,其语言结构也与古英语相差甚远,而现代德语仍保留综合性语言的特点,与古德语基本一致。
在同一种语言的不同方言中,也存在着发展速度不平衡的情况。

在同一种语言系统内部各要素之间,也存在着发展不平衡的情况。
语言中的词汇,由于与社会发展紧密联系,发展速速最快。
值得注意得是,在词汇系统内部,基本词汇和一般词汇的发展速度也是不平衡的。
基本词汇是语言词汇中最基本的部分,其意义经过历史积淀,早在人们思维和社会生活中根深蒂固,具有较大稳定性,不易发生变化。

一般词汇则是社会发展的一面镜子,随时与事物的消亡和产生相呼应,如:
盲流;
下岗;
下海;
大款;
富二代;
Internet;
brunch等。
语法和语音的发展速度则相对缓慢得多。
语法是人类思维长期抽象化的成果,不易改变。
语音是语言的物质外壳,不直接反映社会变化,具有很大的稳定性。
语言发展的规律
1语言随社会的发展而发展。
2语言发展的类推规律。
在语言中,具有相同特征的语言现象如果在数量上达到一定程度,便可从中归纳出某种规则,这种规则是该类语言现象所共有的特征。
一旦这种特征形成,便会对语言系统中别的与其相关的部分产生影响,使这些部分也按自己的规则发展。

3语言发展的简化与丰富化规律
语言发展的简化规律是人类语言的普遍现象。
如许多语言中大量缩略词的涌现。

科技
语言的简化使语言在形式上简单经济,同时也使语言丰富化,两者是辩证统一的。
社会的发展,认识的深化使词的义项增多,词义丰富。
一方面,不断产生新词以适应社会交际的需要;
另一方面,原有词语又不断产生新的义项,来表达与原词义相关的事物。
4语言发展的抽象化规律
随着思维的发展,人类抽象思维的能力日益增强,逐渐从一些具体的表面意义中抽象出本质的深层意义。
如:

5语言发展的理据性规律
语言发展不是随意的,而是由一定道理和根据的。
语言发展的理据性规律主要在词汇的产生中起作用。
词的理据分两种:
逻辑理据和形象理据。
以传统逻辑学下定义的方法,把要表达的对象和与之有相似特征得其他对象区别开来的构词理据称为逻辑理据。
矿泉水;

以心理联想为基础形成的构词理据称为形象理据。
形象理据常指词的比喻义。

►Whatisnowcalledhistoricallinguisticswasdevelopedinitsmainlinesinthecourseofthenineteenthcentury.Scholarshadlongbeenawareofthemodernlanguageschangewithtime.TheyalsoknewthatmanyofthemodernlanguagesofEuropeweredescended,insomesense,frommoreancientlanguages.Forexample,itwasknownthatEnglishhaddevelopedoutofAnglo-SaxonandthatwhatwenowrefertoastheRomancelanguages–French,Spanish,Italian,etc.–allhadtheirorigininLatin.However,untiltheprinciplesofhistoricallinguisticswereestablisheditwasnotgenerallyrealizedthatlanguage-changeisuniversal,continuousand,toaveryconsiderabledegree,regular.
►Itwasonlyafteragreatdealofdetailedworkhadbeendoneduringthenineteenthcentury,inwhatwemaynowthinkofastheclassicalperiodofhistoricallinguistics,fromthe1820stothe1870s,thatscholarscametoabetterunderstandingoftherelationbetweenwrittenandspokenlanguages,ontheonehand,andbetweenstandardandnon-standardlanguages,ontheother.

语言学中研究语言变化和语言关系的一门分支。

►从来源及语法结构来说,英语是日耳曼语的一种,属于印度—欧罗巴语系。
这个语系的得名是由于它包括了欧洲大多数语言和亚洲直至印度的许多种语言。
这些语言是由一种被称为“共同印欧语”的语言经过若干世纪分化后而形成的,而这个共同印欧语本身则已完全消失,没留下只言片语。
印欧语的传播中心(或发源地)很可能在大约公元前3000年俄罗斯的东南部。

诺曼人征服英国之后的200多年间法语一直是英国上层阶级的语言。
会说法语在当时是一种社会地位的标志。
从13世纪开始,产生了其他因素使统治阶级能够对法语逐步疏远或脱离。
1337—1453期间的百年战争给予法语致命的打击。
到了14世纪在英国已是人人都说英语了。
诺曼人征服英国只不过是为英语更快的演化创造了有利条件。
英语本身的结构没有改变,但在词汇,句法方面影响非常大,诗的韵律也被彻底改变了。
在词汇方面的影响来自日常用语(country;

fruit;
table),宗教用语(passion;
religion;
saint),贵族阶级用语(court;
duke),文化用语(justice;
rich;
peace)和为数不多的动词(catch;

pay)等。
此时期的法语对英语的影响的深度和广度还体现在词汇的各个方面,如;
政府(government,parliament,mayor),宗教(person,abbey,faith),法律(judge,suit,jury),陆军海军(army,spy,enemy),生活及服装(fashion,dress,lace),珠宝首饰(jewel,pearl,diamond),饮食(cheer,dinner,supper),家庭生活(curtain,closet,chair),娱乐(dance,music,leisure),打猎(kennel,chase),艺术科学(art,painting,romance),医药(medicine,physician,pain)和很多动词及形容词(able,common,foreign,gentle,safe,carry,arrive,pass,marry)。
另外拉丁语和荷兰语此时期也对英语词汇产生了巨大影响。

英语词汇的三个键盘
在法语词汇上再加上无限度的引入拉丁和希腊语词,这样英语原有的词汇就完全改变了。
在今日的英语词典中,本族成份的词占五分之一,希腊,罗马来源的词占五分之三。
英国作家还拥有大量的同义词。
对于许多概念,常常在通俗的本族语词之外,有一个法语词和一个古奥的拉丁词。
因此,英语可以再词汇和风格的三重键盘上演奏。

►19世纪初,德国语言学家雅各布·
格里姆(JakobGrimm)在《德语语法》一书中,提出了著名的“格里姆定律”。
在该书中,他系统阐述了日耳曼语和其他印欧语之间在演变过程中的辅音对应规律。
通过语音对应规律,可以探求日耳曼诸语言同印欧语中其他语言的历史渊源关系。
源于格里姆定律的语音对应规律,对丰富历史比较语言学的理论方法,起了重要作用。
