Braille,asystemofraiseddotsthatisreadwiththefingers,hashistoricallybeenembossedonpaper.
Braillewasfirstdevelopedinabout1820byayoungFrenchmannamedLouisBraille.HecreatedBraillebymodifyingasystemofnightwritingwhichwasintendedforuseonboardships.Hedidthisworkasaveryyoungmanandhaditcompletedbythetimehewasabout18.Heandhisfriendsattheschoolfortheblindheattendedfoundthatreadingandwritingdotswasmuchfasterthanreadingraisedprintletterswhichcouldnotbewrittenbyhandatall.ThedevelopmentofthissystembyyoungLouisBrailleisnowrecognizedasthemostimportantsingledevelopmentinmakingitpossiblefortheblindtogetagoodeducation.
Brailleconsistsofarrangementsofdotswhichmakeuplettersofthealphabet,numbersandpunctuationmarks.ThebasicBraillesymboliscalledtheBraillecellandconsistsofsixdotsarrangedintheformationofarectangle,threedotshighandtwoacross.Othersymbolsconsistofonlysomeofthesesixdots.Thesixdotsarecommonlyreferredtobynumberaccordingtotheirpositioninthecell.
