OperationalCharacteristics.JTIDSstructuringallowsthesystemtooperateasaninformationdistributionnetworkintowhichtacticaluserstransmitcommandandcontrol,surveillance,position,andstatus,orothersignificantcombatdata,atspecifictimeintervals.Thisinformationisimmediatelyavailabletoeachnetparticipant,whomaydisplayorstorethatportionoftheavailabledataneeded.JTIDScaninterconnectBoeingE-3AAirborneWarningandControlSystems(AWACS)aircraftwithgroundandshipboardcommand,control,andsurveillancecenters,andcombatandsupportaircraft.TheJTIDSfamilyofterminalsemploystheU.S.TacticalDigitalInformationLink

16securedvoice/datacommunicationssystem.
ADistributedTimeDivisionMultipleAccess(DTDMA)systemiscoupledwithaspreadspectrummodulationwaveformtoprovideananti-jamcapability.ThetimedivisionprincipleassignseachJTIDSnetworkuserseveraltimeslots,theexactnumberofwhichisafunctionoftheparticularmission.Eachsystemuserfeedsinformationintoacommunicationsdatastream,representedbyaTDMAringwhichisaccessiblebyallsystemusers.AllJTIDSnetworkmembersareabletocontinuouslymonitorandsampletheinformationbase,pickingoutthespecificdataneededatthetime.
TheJTIDSassignedfrequencyistheL-band,whichoperatesintherangeof960MHzto1,215MHz.ThisisthesamerangeusedbyIdentificationFriendorFoe(IFF)andTacticalAidtoNavigation(TACAN)systems,withwhichJTIDShasoperatingcompatibility.Frequencyhoppingandspreadspectrumtechniques,alongwithencryptionandtimedivision,canbeusedtooptimizeuseofthefrequencyrange.ThebasicTDMAsetupinvolvesslotsthataredividedinto12.8-minuteepochs,whichareinturnfurtherdividedinto12-secondcycles(64altogether),andthecyclesarethendividedinto1,536slots.Thereare128slotspersecond(7.8125millisecondseach),witheachslotconsistingofmessageandsynchronizationdataandtheguardtime.EverymemberofaJTIDSnetworkisassignedtoacommonchannel,andtransmissionisthroughoneormoreoftheavailabletimeslots.Slotscanbeallocatedforspecialapplications,andIFFguardbandsareavailableat1,030MHzand1,090MHz.AJTIDS-equippedaircrafttransmitsitslocationandidentificationoverthenetworkatleastevery12seconds.AlargegroupofJTIDSterminalscanestablishanynumberofsubnetsupto128.
TargettracksestablishedbyvariousradarsensorsarefedintotheJTIDSnetworkwithoutanycodingtoshowwhichplatformhasacquiredtheinformation.Inadditiontoexchangingtrackdata,JTIDScanallowanairborneconsoleoperator,suchasontheE-3AWACS,todeterminethelocationandremainingfuelonboardnearbyfriendlyaircraft.Class

1terminals,designatedARC-181,werethefirstairborneunitsproducedtoprovideabasiccapabilitytotransmitvoiceanddata.DevelopedbytheHughesAircraftGroundSystemsGroup,theywereinstalledinU.S.AirForceandNATOE-3AWACSaircraft.TheARC-181consistedofthreeelectronicsunitsthatfillaboutfiveATR(air-transportablerack)spacesandacontroller.Deliveriesbeganinthelate1970s.
URC-107(V)isthenomenclaturefortheClass
2Hterminalscurrentlyinproduction.Thereareseveralvariantsforaircraftandshipapplications.TheClass
2isthebasicconfigurationdesignedforF-15,F14,TornadoF3,andE-8JSTARSbattlefieldsurveillanceaircraftaswellassubmarineapplications.
2Haddsahigh-poweramplifiergroupincorporatinganantennainterfaceunitthatcanbeconfiguredforspecificapplications,apowerinterfaceunit,andacontrolmonitorsetthatincludesaplasmapaneldisplay,keyboard,andsecure-loadcontrolunit.TheClass

2M,dubbedtheGSQ-239,istheU.S.ArmyversionintendedtobeusedasasubcomponentoftheArmyDataDistributionSystem(ADDS).The2MterminalissmallerandhasArmy-uniquecapabilities,suchastheinternationalX.25localareanetwork(LAN)interfaceinsteadoftheMIL-STD-1553Bdatabusinterface,28VDCvehicleoperation,anintegralblowerreplacingforcedaircooling,improvedportability,andasoldierinterface.The2MterminaldoesnotincorporateintegralvoicechannelsorTACANoperation,buthasCOMSECkeyingcontrol,betterre-promulgationrelayfacilities,increasedover-the-airinitializationandre-keyfunctions,andthecapabilityforslot-by-slotswitchingfromthenormal200Wtransmitpowerdownto42W.TheClass
2MisinstalledwithinanelectronicsheltercarrieronanM1035seriesHMMWV5/4-tontruck.Itenteredfull-rateproductioninJuly1997,andhasalsobeenintegratedintothePatriotmissilesystem.
Inadditiontothebasic2Mterminal,theArmyJTIDSprogramincludesthededicatedJTIDSrelayunits(DJRUs)andNetControlStation-JTIDS(NCS-J).Atypicaldivisionareamayhaveupwardsof16Class
