Scientistshavethoughtaboutusingdrones,buttheyhaven'
tfiguredouthowtomakefree-flyingrobotinsectsthatcanrelyontheirownpowersourcewithoutbeingattachedtoawire.“It’sverytoughwork,”saidseniorauthorEijiroMiyako,achemistattheNationalInstituteofAdvancedIndustrialScienceandTechnology.Hisparticularcontributiontothefieldinvolvesagel,onehe’dconsideredamistake10yearsbeforeandstuckinastoragecabinet.Whenitwasrediscoveredadecadelater,ithadn’tdriedupordegradedatall.“Iwassosurprisedbecauseitstillhadhighviscosity,”Miyakosaid.
Thechemistnoticedthatwhendropped,thegelabsorbedanimpressiveamountofdustfromthefloor.Miyakorealizedthismaterialcouldbeveryusefulforpickinguppollen(花粉).Heandhiscolleagueschoseadroneandattachedhorsehairstoitssmoothsurfacetomimicabee’sfuzzybody.Theycoatedthosehorsehairsinthegel,andthencontrolledthedronesoverlilies,wheretheywouldpickupthepollenfromoneflowerandthendepositthepollenatanotherone,thusfertilizingit.
Thescientistslookedatthehairsunderascanningelectronmicroscopeandcountedupthepollengrainsattachedtothesurfaceandfoundthatthedroneswhosehorsehairshadbeencoatedwiththegelhadabout10timesmorepollenthanthosethathadnotbeencoatedwiththegel.
Miyakodoesnotthinksuchdroneswouldreplacebeesaltogether,butcouldsimplyhelpbeeswiththeirpollinatingduties.There’salotofworktobedonebeforethat'
