Inaweakenedeconomy,manyemployeesfeelaheightenedneedtoprovetheirworthorlooklikeasuperstarworkerwhogoesaboveandbeyondtogetthejobdone.Plus,whencoworkersareworkingthroughtheirlunchbreaks,noonewantstobethepersonwholookslikeaslacker.
Forothers,itisnotjustamatterofsavingtime,butsavingmoney.Eatingoutroutinelygetsexpensive,sobringingalunchtoeatatthedeskisalsothethriftychoicefortheAmericanworker.
Onanationallevel,theUnitedStatesdoesnotmandatethatbusinessesallowtheiremployeesalunchbreak.However,22statesdohaveexplicitlawsonthebooksstatingthatworkersmusttakeahalfhourtohourlunchbreak.Nonetheless,evenworkersinthesestatesoftenfindthemselvesignoringthelawtochowdownnexttotheircomputers.
