BigBrother isatelevisionshowinwhichagroupofpeoplelivetogetherinalargehouse,isolatedfromtheoutsideworldbutcontinuouslywatchedbytelevisioncameras.Eachserieslastsforaroundthreemonths,andthereareusuallyfewerthan15participants.Thehousematestrytowinacashprizebyavoidingperiodicevictionsfromthehouse.Theideafortheshowissaidtohavecomeduringabrainstormsessionatthe Dutch productionhouseof JohndeMolProdukties (anindependentpartof Endemol)on4September1997.The firstBigBrotherbroadcast wasintheNetherlands in1999ontheVeronicaTVchannel.ItwaspickedupbyBrazil,Germany,Argentina,Portugal,theUS,theUK,Spain,Belgium,Sweden,SwitzerlandandItalythefollowingyearandbecameaworld-widesensation.Sincethenithasbeenaprime-timehitinalmost70countries.Theshow'snamecomesfrom GeorgeOrwell's1949novel NineteenEighty-Four,a dystopia inwhich BigBrother canalwaysspyontheinhabitantsofthe dictatorship heheadsthroughtheirtelevisionsets,withtheslogan"BigBrotheriswatchingyou."
Format
Althougheachcountryhasmadeitsownadaptationsandchangestotheformat,thegeneralconcepthasstayedthesame:
"Housemates"or"Houseguests"areconfinedtoaspeciallydesignedhousewheretheireveryactionisrecordedbycamerasandmicrophonesatalltimesandtheyarenotpermittedanycontactwiththeoutsideworld.
Inmostversions,atregularintervals(normallyonceweekly,asintroducedintheUKversion,althoughinmostearlyseriesitwaseverytwoweeks),thehousematesareinvitedtovotetohaveoneofanumberofnominatedhousematesevictedfromthehouse.Insomecasestwohousematesmaybeevictedsimultaneously(a"doubleeviction"),orrarely,nohousemateswillberemovedforthatweek.Attheendofthegame,thelastremaininghousemateisdeclaredthewinnerofthatparticularseriesandreceivesprizes,oftenincludingalargeamountofmoney,acar,avacationand(insomeeditions)ahouse.
Fromasociologicalanddemographicperspective,thisformatallowstheopportunityforanalysisofhowpeoplereactwhenforcedintocloseconfinementwithpeoplewholieoutsidetheir comfortzone,sincetheymayholddifferentopinionsoridealsfromothercontestants,orsimplybelongtoadifferentgroupofpeoplethanacontestantnormallyinteractswith.Indeed,theformatisideallysuitedtosuchanalysisbecausetheviewerisaffordedtheopportunitytoseehowapersonreactsontheoutsidethroughtheconstantrecordingoftheiractionsandalsowhattheyfeelontheinsidethroughthe DiaryRoom/ConfessionRoom.Theresultscanrangefromviolentorangryconfrontationstogenuineandtenderconnections(oftenincludingromanticinterludes),providingentertainmenttothepublic.
Besideslivingtogetherundercontinuousobservation,whichisthemajorattractionofthecontest,theprogramreliesonfourbasicprops:
Thestripped-bareback-to-basicsenvironmentinwhichtheylive,theevictions,theweeklytasksandcompetitionssetby BigBrother andthe"Diary/ConfessionRoom,"inwhichthehousematesindividuallyconveytheirthoughts,feelings,andfrustrationsandrevealtheirnomineesforeviction.
Inthefirstseasonofmostseriesof BigBrother,thehousethatthehousemateshadtoliveinwasverybasic.Althoughessentialamenitiessuchasrunningwater,furnitureandalimitedrationoffoodwereprovided,luxuryitemswereoftenforbidden.Thisaddeda survivalist elementtotheshow,increasingthepotentialforsocialtensionwithinthehouse.Nowadays,almostallseriesprovideamodernhouseforthecontest,withajacuzzi,sauna,VIPsuite,loftandotherluxuries.
Thehousematesarerequiredtodohousework,andaresettasksbytheproducersoftheshow,whocommunicatewiththehousematesviatheomnipresentauthorityfigureknowntothemonlyas"BigBrother."Thetasksaredesignedtotesttheirteamworkabilitiesandcommunityspirit,andinsomecountriesthehousemates'shoppingbudgetorweeklyallowanceoftendependsontheoutcomeofanygiventasks.Thehousemateshaveaweeklyallowancewithwhichtheycanbuyfoodandotheressentials.
Atregularintervals,thehousemateseachprivatelynominateanumberoffellowhousematesthattheywishtoseeevictedfromthehouse.Thehousemateswiththemostnominationpointsarethenannouncedandviewersaregiventheopportunityto voteviatelephone forwhomtheywishtoseeevicted.TheonlyknownexceptiontothisprocessistheAmericanversion,inwhichthehousematesthemselvesvotetoevicteachother.Afterthevotesaretallied,the"evictee"leavesthehouseandisinterviewedlivebythehostoftheshow,usuallyinfrontofastudioaudience.
Theseriesisnotableforinvolvingthe Internet.Althoughtheshowtypicallybroadcastsdailyupdatesintheevening(whicharesometimescriticizedfortheirheavyediting),viewerscanalsowatchacontinuous,24-hourfeedfrommultiplecamerasontheweb.Thesewebsiteswerehighlysuccessful,evenaftersomenationalseriesstartedchargingforaccesstothevideostream.Insomecountries,Internetbroadcastingwassupplementedbyupdatesviaemail, WAPand SMS.TheHouseisevenshownliveon satellitetelevision,althoughinsomecountries,suchastheUK,witha10-15minutedelaytoallowlibelousorunacceptablecontent(suchasreferencestopeoplewhoarenottakingpartintheprogramandhavethereforenotconsentedtohavepersonalinformationaboutthembroadcast)toberemoved.
Despitederisionfrommanycritics,theshowhasbeenacommercialsuccessaroundtheworld.Thevoyeuristicnatureoftheshow,inwhichcontestantsvolunteertosurrendertheirprivacyinreturnforminorcelebritystatusandacomparativelysmallcashprize,hasattractedmuchscorn.[1] Onnumerousoccasions,participantsinthevariousserieshavebecomesexuallyinvolvedwitheachother,sometimesengagingin intercourse infrontofBigBrother'scameras.Thisrecordedmaterialistypicallynotbroadcastduetoitsexplicitnature,asintheAustralianandAmericaneditions.Othereditions,however,suchastheGermanandBritishversions,dobroadcastit.TheInternetstreamalsocapturessuchmoments,whichhasledtosomecontroversy,withcertainjurisdictionssuchas Greece attemptingtohavetheshowremovedfromtheairwaves.[1]
Mostinternationalversionsoftheshowremainquitesimilartoeachotherinthattheirmainformatremainstruetotheoriginal flyonthewall,observationalstyle,withtheemphasisbeingonhumanrelationships.Thisistakentotheextentthatcontestantsareforbiddenfromdiscussingnominationsorvotingstrategyaltogether.The US version,however,hassince2001takenonasignificantlydifferentformatfromtheothersintheirsecondseason,withafarstrongeremphasisonstrategy,competitionandvoting.

BigBrothercontestantsare,forthemostpart,isolatedwithinthehouse.Theyhavenoaccesstotelevision,radioortheinternetandarenotallowedroutinecommunicationwiththeoutsideworld.(Inspecialinstancestheproducershaveallowedcontestantstoviewtelevisedevents;intheUKseriesthehousemateswereallowedtowatcha2002WorldCupmatch,the InaugurationofBarackObama,andthe2010WorldCup2ndroundgameEnglandversusGermany,sometimesasarewardforwinningachallenge.InthePhilippineseries,thehousematesalsowatchedthepilotepisodeofAngelito:
BatangAma asasurprisebyBigBrotherandthe fight between MannyPacquiao vs. JuanManuelMarquez asarewardbywinningatask).Insomeshowsbooksandwritingmaterialsarealsoforbidden.Sometimesinserieswiththisruleanexceptionismadeforreligiousmaterialssuchasthe Bible, Torah or Qur'an.Someversions(includingtheBritishversion)banallwritingimplements,extendingtoanyitemthatcanbeusedtowritesuchaslipstickoreyeliner.Despitethefactthatthehousematesaregenerallyisolated,onsomeoccasionssomehouseguestsareallowedtoexitthehouseaspartoftasks.Housematesaresometimespermittedtoexitthehouseincaseofemergenciesbutmustreturnwithin24hourstoavoidbeingeliminatedfromthegame.
Contestantshaveregularlyscheduledinteractionswiththeshow'shost(mostlyonevictionnights).Throughouteachdaytheprogram'sproducer,viathe"BigBrother"voice,issuesdirectivesandcommandstocontestants.Someversionsoftheshowallowprivatecounsellingsessionswithapsychologist.Theseareallowedatanytime,oftenconductedbytelephonefromtheDiaryRoom.
Contactfromtheoutsideworldhastakenplaceintheformoffly-oversbyplanescarryingbannerswithmessagesforthecontestants.Whenevertheseplanesarediscoveredbyproducers,thehouseguestsareorderedindoorsbyBigBrotherinanefforttopreventthemfromreadingthebanners.
