Thefirstpartincluding1-2givesstudentspracticeinwritingashortacceptancespeech.Step2clearlyoutlineswhatstudentsshouldincludeintheirspeeches.Besuretohavestudentsconsiderwhotheiraudienceisandhowtheychoosetheirwordsandmannerofspeaking.Thispartisabitchallengingforstudents,butverypractical.Itrequiresstudentstoputwhattheyhavelearnedintodailyuse,whichistherealpurposeoflanguagelearning.Theteachershouldinstructstudentsinordertomakeitsoundformal.Thesecondpart,thatis,Step3givesstudentspracticeindiscussingingroupswhathadtobedonetorebuildacityafteranearthquake.StudentsshouldhavetheirdiscussionafterlookingatthedesignofthenewTangshanstamps.
AstothepartReadingandwritingonPages31-32,theteachershouldfirstgetthestudentstoreadthebriefdescriptionabouthowtowriteanewspaperstoryandthenhavethempareanewspaperstorytoashortstory.Explaintostudentsthatanewspaperneedsaheadlinetoattractthereader’sattentionsincethereadermaynothaveboughtthenewspaperbeforetheyreadtheheadline.Newspaperstoriesandshortstoriesareorganizedverydifferently.Usuallyashortstorybeginswithsmalldetailsandincludesbigdetailslater.Anewspaperstorydoesjusttheopposite.Bothkindsofstoriesuseparagraphswithmainideas.Thepoint-of-viewinagoodnewspaperstoryisobjective(i.e.ithasnopoint-of-view)whileashortstoryissubjective(i.e.hasapoint-of-view).Anewspaperstoryhasnoconclusion;ashortstorygenerallydoes.Afterunderstandingalltheabove,studentsarerequiredtopreparetheoutlineforashortnewspaperstoryforChinaDaily.Writingisahigherstageoflanguagelearning.Theteachershouldfrequentlygivestudentssomeassignmentsofwriting.Onlyinthisway,canstudentsusewhattheyhavelearnedmorefreely.
