TheEarth’scrust(地壳)ismadeupofrockcalledplates.Astheseplatesmove,theysometimescrash(撞)againsteachother,causingthecrusttoquake.IncitiessuchasTokyo,wheresmallquakeshappenquiteoften,manymodernbuildingsaredesignedtobeflexiblesowhentheEarthmoves,theymovewithit.
Earthquakescanalsobreakupgasandoilpipes.Thiscancausefirestobreakout,whichcandoasmuchdamageastheearthquakeitself.Anothereffectofearthquakesistsunamis.Thesearehugewavescreatedbyearthquakesbeneaththesea.Theycanbemanymetreshighandcausegreatdamagetocoastaltownsandcities.China,Japan,RussiaandtheUSAhavethehighestoccurrence(发生)ofearthquakesintheworld.
