Preliminaryresultsfromatwomonthtrial,inwhichthepillwasgivento36heartdiseasepatientsand36healthyvolunteerswithanaverageageof67,werepresentedatameetingoftheAmericanHeartAssociation.Itwasshowntoimprovethefunctionoftheendothelium—thelayerofcellsliningbloodvessels.Italsoimprovedtheirsensitivitytonitricoxide,thegaswhichcausedtheenlargementofthevesselsinresponsetoexercise.
IanWilkinson,headofCambridgeUniversity’sclinicaltrialsunit,said,“Theseresultsarepotentiallyverysignificantanditmeetsthegoal,butweneedmoretrialstoseeiftheytranslateintofewerheartattacksandstrokes.”
Furtherstudiesareplanned,withresearchershopingitcouldofferachoiceforheartdiseasesuffererswhocannottakethecholesterollowingdrugs.
