Abstract
WiththerapiddevelopmentandprosperityoftheChineseculture,itsspreadisbecomingmoreandmoreimportant,inwhichChinesefilmsplayaquitesignificantrole.Therefore,thetranslationofChinesefilmtitlesisdrawingmoreattention.ThethesisdoesresearchesintoChinesefilmtitletranslationprinciplesandstrategies,andholdsthatagoodChinesetitletranslationshouldcombinethecommercialfactorwiththeculturalfactorandusepropertranslationmethods.Onlyinthisway,canthetranslatorgetasuccessfultranslatedversionofaChinesefilmtitle.

摘要
随着中国文化大发展大繁荣进程的进一步加速,中国文化输出成为其中的重要一环,中文电影又成为文化输出的重要途径之一。
在此过程中,电影名称的翻译显得尤为重要。
本文研究了中文电影名称翻译原则和策略,只有将商业目的和文化传播目的统一起来并运用适当的翻译方法才能得到好的翻译电影片名。

1.1ThedevelopmentofChinesefilms
OnApril23,2012,theSecondPekingInternationalMovieFestivalopenedintheNationalConferenceCenterinBeijing,whichattractedmorethan300supermoviestarsanddirectors,includingJamesCameron,thedirectorofTitanic.ThisfestivalshowsthattheChinesefilmindustryisflourishingandmakingprogressstepbystep.
Intheworldofglobalization,filmshavebecomeoneofthoseimportantmeansofcross-culturalcommunication.Asapopularartformtothepublic,theytransferinformation,enrichourlifeandbringusenjoyment.Theyarethemediaofculturalcommunication,whichreflecttheartisticachievementofanethnicgrouporasocialgroup.Whatismore,thefilmindustryhasagreatcommercialvalue.HollywoodoftheUSmakesconsiderablecontributionstotheGDPofAmerica.
Sincethebeginningofthe21stcentury,theChinesefilmindustryhasexploded.Withtheaccelerationofculturaldiversityandinclusiveness,theChineseareexploringawaytoletourfilms"gooutside".Sincethereformandopeningup,manyfamousChinesedirectorshaveemerged,includingZhangYimou,FengXiaogang,XuKeandsoon,aswellasthosefamousmoviestars,suchasZhangZiyiandGongli.Withthehardworkofallthemovie-makersandotherpeople,theChinesefilmsarerisingontheinternationalstage.Asaresult,moreandmoreforeignersgetinterestedinChinesefilms.AlthoughChinesefilmindustryjusttakesitsfirststeptotheinternationalmarket,itsmomentumisprudentandstrong.Withrichculturalresourcesandnumeroustopics,theChinesemovie-makerswillsurelymaketheChinesefilmindustryarapidandlastingdevelopment.However,asChineseisnotaspopularasEnglish,theproblemfacedwithusishowtotranslatethesefilms.This,therefore,comestotheworkoftranslation.
1.2ThedevelopmentofChinesefilmtitletranslating
Inaworldofglobalization,Chinesefilmindustrymustadoptthepolicyof"goingoutside"toensureitscompetingability.Intheprocessofgoingout,translationplaysanessentialrole.
Chineseculture,withitslonghistoryandcomplexsystems,isquitedifficultforforeignerstocomprehend.Chinesefilms,carryingalargequantityofChineseculturalelements,maybemoredifficultfortheforeignaudiencetounderstandintermsofmeaningandessence.Soagoodtranslationisabsolutelynecessary.Inthisprocess,thefirstjobistotranslatethetitle.Astheaudienceknowlittlewhatafilmisaboutbeforeitisshown,theirsubjectivefeelingsorpotentialevaluationsaboutthisfilmarealldependentonthedirectstimulusofitstitle.Afilmtitlegivesthefirstimpressionofthewholework.Assoonaspeopleseethefilmtitle,theywillthinkofsomethingfamiliarintheirmindandunderstandthecontentbetterbeforeseeingthefilm.Therefore,titlesoffilmsequal,toagreatdegree,tothebrandofmerchandise.Agoodtranslationofthetitlewouldbetheicingonthecake;or,abadversionwoulddiscounttheartisticattractionofthefilm.
BaoHuinanstudiedthetranslationofthefilmtitlesandsaidthat"agoodtitleofafilmshouldbebriefandconclusive,showitsthemethoroughly,andarousetheimaginationofaudiencedeeply."(包慧南,2001)
Inaword,filmtitletranslationshouldfocusonboththetranslationofculture,whichincludesinformativevalueandaestheticvalue,andtheaudiencerate,whichisthecommercialvalue.Therehavebeenmanystudiesonthetranslationoffilmtitles.TheauthornoticesthatthereislittlestudyonthetranslationofChinesefilmtitles.Sotheauthorwillexploresomeprinciplesandmethodsinthisfield.
Chapter2PrinciplesofFilmTitleTranslating
Highlightingfilmcontent,conveyingthethemeinformation,establishingthewholeemotionaltone,providingaestheticpleasureandincreasingboxofficearetheultimategoalsoffilmtitles.Therearemanyschoolsthatadvocatedifferentprinciplesintranslation.Theauthorthinksthatfilmtitletranslationabidesbytwoprinciples,namely,culturalprincipleandcommercialprinciple.
2.1Culturalprinciple
Translationisnotmerelyalinguisticconversionprocess;itistheculturalexchangeprocessaswell.SincegreatdifferencesexistbetweentheWestandtheEastinsociety,geography,climate,history,politics,economy,values,customs,ethics,andsoon,reflectingculturalvalueinfilmtitletranslationandpromotingculturalexchangeandunderstandingareaveryimportanttask.
2.1.1Informativevalueprinciple
Filmtitletranslationshouldpassthecontent-relatedinformationfaithfully,andthenachievetheidentitybetweenthetranslatedtitleandtheoriginalwork,whichistheso-calledinformativevalueprinciple.Ascultureisloadedbyinformation,theinformativevalueprincipleplaysthebasicroleinculturalprinciple.Thisisthemostbasicprinciple.Asmentionedabove,afilmtitleisrichininformation.Becauseitrequiresthatatitlebebriefandclear,everywordinthetitlecarrieslargequantitiesofinformation,whichcanconveythecontent,theme,emotionaltoneofthefilm.Tomeetthisprinciple,translationofafilmtitleshouldbereadableandlucid.
Inhisbookabouttranslationtheory,LiuMi-Qingputforwardthreeprinciples,amongwhichthereadabilityofthetargetlanguagehasmoreeffectonthetranslationoffilmtitles.Readabilityisthebasicprinciple.(LiuMi-Qing,1999)Totheauthor,thetranslationofthefilm《饮食男女》(EatDrinkManWoman)violatesthisprinciple.Itisnotdirecttranslation.ItisnoexaggerationtosaythatthiskindoftranslationisjustMATwithoutanyartificialthoughtandattractiveelementsinthetitle.WhentheaudiencereadthisEnglish
