Abstract
OdetotheWestWindisoneofthemostfamouslyricpoemswrittenbyPercyByssheShelley,thegreatBritishromanticpoetin19thcentury.Inthispoem,thepoetinordertoshowthewonderofthesky,thelandandtheocean,heusedalotofrichimaginationsandnewallegories.Inhiswriting,Shelleyreliedmainlyonsymbolicfeatures.Thewestwindisnotonlythenature’swind,butalsothewindofrevolution.Inthesurface,Shelleydescribedthenaturalwind.Actually,heexpectedthestormofrevolutionthroughthewestwind.Byusingsymbolicfeatures,thewestwindbecomesmoreimpressiveanddeep-going.
Actually,thesearebasedonthespecifichistoricalperiodandtheenvironment.Throughanalysisonthebackgroundofthispoem,thisarticlemainlyanalyzesfromsomemajoraspectslikeitsstructurecharacteristicsandfiguresofspeech,especiallyanalyzesthepoet’semotions.Aboveall,inthepoem,Shelleypraisedthewestwind,expressedhisdesiretogetridoftherealityandtoenjoyfreedom,andshowedhisoptimismonhuman’sfuture.

1.Introduction
PercyByssheShelleyisoneofthemosttalentedlyricpoetsinEnglishliterature.Hehasbeencalled“Oneofthebestartistsofusall”byWilliamWordsworth,andByronpraiseshim“WithoutexceptionthebestandleastselfishmanIeverknew”.Sowecanseethathewasoneoftheoutstandingpoetsinthepoeticworld,andthiseraisknownastheromanticismperiod.
TheromanticismisanimportantbranchofliteraturewhichthoroughlymanifestedthesocialcharacteristicofBritishduringitsperiod,andsymbolizedforthepeople’srequestthroughliterature(WangTing,2011:
224).Inthehistoryofliterature,romanticismisgenerallyregardedasthethoughtthatdesignatesaliteraryandphilosophytheorywhichtendstoseetheindividualastheverycenterofalllifeandallexperiences(WangXuefang,2012:
224).Sotheintimaterelationshipbetweenliteratureandsocietywasclearlydisplayed.TheromanticismdevelopedextremelyveryfastinBritish,wecanseetheessenceofromanticismreflectedspecificsituationofthatperiodandtheneedsofsociety.
OdetotheWestWindisoneofmasterpiecepoemsofShelley,writtenin1819.Thispoemhasfiveparts,respectivelyintheformofasonnet.Atthistime,thepoetShelleylivedinItaly,andwasathispeakofwriting.Intheearly19thcentury,scientificsocialismdidnotborn,andthecounterforcefromfeudalnoblesandthecapitalistclasswerestillverypowerful.Sothepoemunavoidablehasthecircumlocutoryandsadtone.Asapioneerofsocialismthought,Shelleyshowedhisoptimismontheprospectsofrevolutionandhuman’sfutureallalong,hebelievedthatthejusticeissuretoovercometheevil.Generallyspeaking,therhythmofthepoemissevereandunyielding.
Aboveall,wecanknowthathispoemissaidtobethereflectionofShelley’sfreedomandthespiritoftheage.Shelleycreated“OwildWestWind,thoubreathofAutumn’sbeing”bythecombinationofhisownlifeandthewildwind.Itisfullytruethatthewestwindisthedestroyeraswellasthepreserver.Itisthemagnificentsectionsandchaptersthatcryouttherhythmoflivesandthedanceofsouls.Sowecanrealizethetheme,Shelley’swestwindisasaspiritthatcandestroyeverycreatureinautumninordertoreviveinthespringtime(WangTing,2011:

2.TheBackgroundofromanticismandPercyShelley’spoem
Inthelateof18thcentury,aftertheFrenchrevolutionandtheEuropeanpantheism,suchastheFrance’sEnlightenmentidealismandreturningtothenature,Englishliteraturehasbroughtamassiveliteraturemovement,itwascalledRomanticismLiterature.AtthattimeinEurope,manycountrieslabormovementsandtherevolutionmovementswereblustery.TheworkingclassinEnglandstrivedforitsownrightstosubsistence.Meanwhile,thebourgeoisiewasinthefiercestruggleforthegovernment,fightfortheirrights,too.Undersuchconditions,akindofpatrioticpoetwasboughtout,theyusedliteraturetoawakenpeople,andwecalledthem“RomanticismPoets”.Theywerefullofcriticalspiritsandreligiousfeelings,andsymbolismwastheirworksmaincharacteristics.
