In1977,WangariMaathaistartedtheGreenBeltMovement.ThegoalistoplanttreesalloverAfrica,toreplacethosecutdownovertheyears.Treesarethemainsourceofcookingfuel.Treesalsoprotectwildlife.Andtheykeepnutrientsinthesoilandhelppreventflooding.
Todaytheprogramoperatesinanumberofcountries.Areportedthirtymilliontreeshavebeenplanted.

Beforethe1970s,economicproblemswereseenmainlyintermsofalackofbalance.Toomuchdemandcausedinflation.Toomuchsupplycausedarecession.
Governmentswouldtakestepsaggressivelytore-balancesupplyanddemand.Lowinterestratesandincreasedgovernmentspendingwouldexpandgrowthandemployment.Then,ifpriceswentuptoomuch,higherinterestrateswouldeaseinflation.
Butinthe70s,manynationsexperiencedbothlowemploymentandhighinflationatthesametime.Thiswascalledstagflation.Andnoonecouldexplainit.
FinnKydlandandEdwardPrescottshowedthatstagflationresultedwhenpolicymakersdidnotdoastheypromised.Mostgovernmentssaytheywanthighemploymentandlowinflation.But,overtime,eventscancausethemnottofollowtheirstatedeconomicpolicytosupportthesegoals.Thisiscalledthetimeconsistencyproblem.
Thetwoeconomistspublishedanotherstudyinnineteeneighty-two.Theydevelopedwaystoexplainbusinesscycles,timesofincreaseordecreaseineconomicactivity.Theyshowedhownewtechnologycreatesperiodsofeconomicgrowthandproductivity.
