TheOdysseybeginstenyearsaftertheendoftheten-yearTrojanWar.ForthesakeofOdysseyhasstabbedPolypheme’seyeswhosefartherisPoseidon,thegodofthesea,OdysseushasbeendelayedbyPoseidon’scensureandstillnotreturnedhomefromthewar.Odysseus'sonTelemachusistwentyandissharinghisabsentfather’shouseontheislandofIthacawithhismotherPenelopeandacrowdof108boisterousyoungmen,"theSuitors",whoseaimistopersuadePenelopetomarryoneofthem,allthewhileenjoyingthehospitalityofOdysseus'householdandeatinguphiswealth.
