Weliveinaworldfullofcolorsandthecolorsplayanimportantroleinourlife.ThispaperwillhighlightthedifferentimplicationsofcolorwordsbothinEnglishandChinese,andwillcarryoutacomparativestudyfromseveralaspects.
Mainly,thepaperwillclassifythebasicEnglishandChinesecolors.Withseveralmethods,suchasblackandbluearecoolcolorswhileredandyellowarewarmcolors.Besides,thepaperwillanalyzethedifferentimplicationsofbasicEnglishandChinesecolorwords.Someexamplesofbasiccolorwordswillbegiven,suchasblackandhei,whiteandbai,redandhong,greenandlv,blueandlan,yellowandhuang,tofindoutthedifferentimplicationsofthesecolorwordsinEnglishandChinese.
So,fromthisstudy,wewillgettoknowthatthebasicEnglishandChinesecolorwordshavedifferentimplications,whichishopedtobebeneficialfortranslation,ourcrossculturalcommunicationandinternationaldevelopment.

Sinceancienttime,peoplefromChinaandwestallhavebeenusingavarietyofcolorwordstodescribetherealworld,suchasHeiandBlack,BaiandWhite,HongandRed,LvandGreen,LanandBlue,HuangandYellow.
Infact,wordsofcolorareveryabundantinbothEnglishandChinese.Onaccountofdifferentcustoms,cultures,environments,religiousbeliefsandotherfactors,themeaningsofcolorwordsinChineseandEnglisharedistinctfromeachother.Differentcolorwordsindifferentnationsexpressandreflectdifferentcontents.Althoughpeopleallhavesoundknowledgeofcolorwordsandthecolorisrelatedtoeveryone’slife,thereisstilldoubtaboutwhatthedifferentimplicationsofEnglishandChinesecolorwordsare.
Languageisthecarrierandreflectionofculture,andcolortermisapartoflanguage(Paul,2004,P.126).BythecomparativestudyondifferentimplicationsofbasiccolorwordsinEnglishandChinese,wecanknowmoreaboutwhatisgoingoninpeople’smind,intheirlanguageandculture.Atthesametimeitisexpectedthatthispapermaybebeneficialfortranslation,ourcrossculturalcommunicationandinternationaldevelopment.

ThecomparisonofbasicEnglishandChinesecolorwordsissuchahotissuethatthereareagreatnumberofliteraturesandmaterialsaboutthecomparisonofbasicEnglishandChinesecolorwords.
TheearlyperceptionofcolorcanbetracedbacktoancientGreece(Harry,1980,P.129).Thegreatphilosophers,PlatoandAristotleweretheforerunnerswhoinitiallypresentedtheiroptionsoncolorfollowingtheprinciplesofphilosophyandaesthetics(Marc,1974,P.225).SinceBerlinandKaypublishedtheBasicColorTerms:
TheirUniversityandEvolution,westernresearchershavestudiedthebasiccolorwords.Theybelievethatalllanguageshaveabouttwotoelevenbasiccolorwords,andamongthemthemostbasiccolorwordsareblackandwhite(BerlinandKay,1969).Atthesametime,theyalsofoundthatthemostrepresentativecolorinacolorcategorycandividethescopeofthecolor(George,1973,P.324).
Chineseresearchersstartedtherelatedstudyverylate.Inrecentyears,manyofChinesescholarsareputtingemphasisonstudyoftheChinesebasiccolorterms.GuiYongxiacenteredonthefuzzinessofthecolorwordsandanalyzedthemetaphorofcolorwords(Gui,2012,P.45).In“OnColorTermsandQualityofAmbiguity”byPro.TiepingWu,theauthorhasdoneresearchonambiguityofcolorterms(Wu,1979,P.175).In“TentativeResearchonImaginationofColorTerms”byWangxiZhang,theauthorhasdonesomeresearchonimaginationofcolorterms,fullydiscoveringthedeeperreasonsofcomplexityofmeaningsofcolorterms.
So,thispaperwillcomparativelystudythedifferentimplicationsofbasiccolorwordsinEnglishandChinese.
3.Classificationsofthecolorwords
Onaccountofdifferentmethodsofclassification,therewillbedifferentresultsofclassification.Sointhischapter,ananalysiswillbegivenfromseveralaspects.
3.1Methodsofclassification
Thenumberofcolorwordsishugeandtheclassificationiscomplicated,soitisimportanttochooseagoodmethodtogetagoodresultofclassification.
Themethodsofclassificationofthecolorwordsincludethemethodoftheetymonofthecolorwords,themethodofpeople’sfeelingofthecolorwords,themethodofthemeaningofthecolorwordsandthemethodoftheapplicationintheindustryofthecolorwords.

Inwesterncountry,“ablacksweet”“blackwater”meandirty.“Blackmoney”indicatestheincomeearnedinanillegalway.BlackisalsoacolorformourningdressinWesterncountries.“Ablackdog”and“blackmood”bothrefertothelowspiritofpeople.Whenpeoplegetangry,theylook“black-browed”or“blackintheface”or“asblackasthunder”,andtheyalsohave“blackpassion”.
