Theplanthasalonghistory.Backwhenmammothsandwoollyrhinoceroseswalkedtheland,anArcticgroundsquirrelburiedseedsandfruitsinanundergroundchamberneartheKolymaRiverinnortheasternSiberia.Thegroundbecamepermafrost,alayerofsoilthatstaysfrozenforalongtime.
Recently,Russianscientistsdugouttheoldsquirrelholeandfoundtheplantremains38metersbelowthesurface.Backatthelab,theteamfednutrientstotissuefromthreeofthefruitstogrowshoots.Thenthescientiststransferredtheshootstopotsfilledwithsoil.Theplantsproducedseedsthatcouldbeusedtogrowevenmoreofthem.
It’simportantforscientiststoknowthatplanttissuescanstillberevivedafterbeingfrozenforalongtime.That’sbecausemanyresearchersaretryingtopreservetheseedsofmodernplantsbyfreezingthemandthenstoringthemingiantlockersatvariousspotsaroundtheglobe.Onesuchendeavor,anundergroundfacilityinNorway,iscalledtheSvalbardGlobalSeedVault.Itstoreshundredsofthousandsoffrozenseeds.Ifaplantevergoesextinct,scientistscouldbringitbackbytakingitsseedsfromtheSvalbardorotherstoragelockers.
“Nooneknowshowlongtheyareabletolivefor,butfreezingisbasicallytheformatformanyplantconservationattemptsnowadays.”Shen-Millersaid.It’sagoodthingthatatleastsomeplantsaretoughenoughtosurvivetheexperience.
