ThearticlereportsontheCareerConnectionsprogramwhichisdevelopedtohelphighschoolstudentswithdisabilitiesidentifytheircareergoals,andkeepthejobsthatmatchthosegoals.Theprogramhelpsthespecialneedsstudentssearchforemploymentopportunitiesthatconformswiththeirskillsandinterests.CareerConnectionsiscomprisedofsixprogramelementswhicharedesignedtoanswerspecificquestionthatcanguidethestudent'scareerpath.

YoungpeoplesearchingforemploymentopportunitiesfreshourofhighschoolknowhowdifficultitcanbetofindopeningsthatHetheirskillsandinterests.Itisn'teasysuccessfullycompetingwithotherjobseekersforthosealltoorarepositionsthatpayagoodwage,havereasonablehours,andofferemployerbenefitsandprospectsforadvancement.Thisisadauntingundertakingformanyindividu-als—andevenmoresoforayoungpersonwhohappenstohaveadisability.AccordingtotheUnitedStatesChamberofCommerce,theunemploymentrateforindividualswithdisabilitiesisastaggering62percent.TheGramWoodAreaEducationAgency(GWAEA),anintermediateagencythatserves33eastcentralIowaschooldistricts,beganworkingin2000todeterminewhyyoungpeoplewithdisabilitieswerehavingadifficulttimetransitioningfromhighschooltotheworldofwork.GWAEAwasparticularlydisturbedbyitsfollow-upsurveyfindingswhichshowedthatstudentsinthemiddlerangeoftheseveritycontinuumwerestrugglingtofindandkeepgoodjobs.Morethan40percentofgraduatesservedinwhatwerecalledSelf-ContainedwithIntegrationprogramsandwereunemployed,andmorethan20percentonlyworkedpantimewithin18monthsofleavinghighschool.Theagencydeterminedthatoneexplanationforthenumbersisthefactchatstudentshadinsufficientcareerexplorationandworkexperiencesinhighschool.Asaresult,mostgraduatedwithnorealideaofwhattheywantedtodo.Compoundingtheproblemwastheiactthatmanystudentseitherdidnotseekordidnotqualifyforadultservicesthatmighthavehelpedthementeracareerthatmatchedtheirtalentsandinterests.
CareerConnectionsCareerConnectionswascreatedtohelphighschoolstudentswithdisabilitiesidentifycareergoalsandthenfind,learnandkeepjobsthatmatchthosegoals.Foundedin2001withgrantsfromtheU.S,DepartmentofEducation'sOfficeofSpecialEducationPrograms,CareerConnectionsisacollaborativeeffortinvolvingstudents,families,schoolstaff.GWAEAandcommunityrehabilita-tionagenciessuchasGoodwillIndustriesoftheHeartlandandAdvancementServicesofJonesCounty,Theprogramhasexpandedtoserve60to70stu-dentsannuallyfrom21Iowahighschools,withdistrictspayingforprogramservices.Theprogratnwasdevelopedonthepremisethatstudentswithdisabilitiesneedextratrainingandsupporttobesuccessfulintheworkforce.Ithassixprogramelements,eachdesignedtoansweraspecificquestionthatwillhelpguidethestudent'scareerpath.
