Everybody'sbettingtheirlifeonsomething.You'rebettingyourlifeonsomething--youjustbetterknowwhyyou'rebettingwhatyou'rebettingon.So,everybody'sbettingtheirlifeonsomething,andwhenI,youknow,madeabet,IhappenedtobelievethatJesuswaswhohesaidhewas.Buteverybody'sgot--andIbelieveinapluralisticsociety--everybody'sbettingonsomething.AndwhenIstartedthechurch,youknow,Ihadnoplanstodowhatit'sdoingnow.AndthenwhenIwrotethisbook,andallofasuddenitjusttookoff,thenIstartedsaying,now,what'sthepurposeofthisBecauseasIstartedtosay,Idon'tthinkyou'regivenmoneyorfameforyourownego,ever.Ijustdon'tbelievethat.Andwhenyouwriteabookthatthefirstsentenceofthebookis,"It'snotaboutyou,"then,whenallofasuddenitbecomesthebest-sellingbookinhistory,yougottofigure,well,Iguessit'snotaboutme.That'skindofano-brainer.So,whatisitfor
AndIbegantothinkaboutwhatIcallthe"stewardshipofaffluence"andthe"stewardshipofinfluence."SoIbelieve,essentially,thatleadershipisstewardship.Thatifyouarealeaderinanyarea--inbusiness,inpolitics,insports,inart,inacademics,inanyarea--youdon'townit;youareastewardofit.Forinstance,that'swhyIbelieveinprotectingtheenvironment.Thisisnotmyplanet.Itwasn'tminebeforeIwasborn.It'snotgoingtobemineafterIdie.I'mjustherefor80yearsandthenthat'sit.
Iwasdebatingtheotherdayonatalkshow,andtheguywaschallengingmeandgo,"What'sapastordoingonprotectingtheenvironment"AndIaskedthisguy,Isaid,"Well,doyoubelievethathumanbeingsareresponsibletomaketheworldalittlebitbetterplaceforthenextgenerationDoyouthinkwehaveastewardshiphere,totaketheenvironmentseriously"Andhesaid,"No."Isaid,"Oh,youdon't"Isaid,"Letmemakethisclearagain.Doyoubelievethatashumanbeings--I'mnottalkingaboutreligion--doyoubelievethatashumanbeings,itisourresponsibilitytotakecareofthisplanetandmakeitjustalittlebitbetterforthenextgeneration"Andhesaid,"No.Notanymorethananyotherspecies."Whenhesaidtheword"species,"hewasrevealinghisworldview.Andhewassaying,"I'mnomoreresponsibletotakecareofthisenvironmentthanaduckis."Wellnow,Iknowalotoftimesweactlikeducks,butyou'renotaduck.You'renotaduck.Andyouareresponsible--that'smyworldview.Andso,youneedtounderstandwhatyourworldviewis.
Theproblemismostpeopleneverreallythinkitthrough.Theyneverreallycodifyitorqualifyitorquantifyit,andsay,"ThisiswhatIbelievein.ThisiswhyIbelievewhatIbelieve."Idon'tpersonallyhaveenoughfaithtobeanatheist.Butyoumay,youmay.Yourworldview,though,doesdetermineeverythingelseinyourlife,becauseitdeterminesyourdecisions;itdeterminesyourrelationships;itdeterminesyourlevelofconfidence.Itdetermines,really,everythinginyourlife.Whatwebelieve,obviously--andyouknowthis--determinesourbehavior,andourbehaviordetermineswhatwebecomeinlife.
