I'mhonoredtobewithyoutodayforyourcommencementfromoneofthefinestuniversitiesintheworld.TruthbetoldInevergraduatedfromcollegeandthisistheclosestI’veevergottentoacollegegraduation.TodayIwanttotellyouthreestoriesfrommylife.That’sit.Nobigdeal.Justthreestories.
Thefirststoryisaboutconnectingthedots.IdroppedoutofReedCollegeafterthefirstsixmonthsbutthenstayedaroundasadropped-inforanother18monthsorsobeforeIreallyquit.SowhydidIout
ItstartedbeforeIwasborn.Mybiologicalmotherwasayoungunwedgraduatestudentandshedecidedtoputmeupforadoption.ShefeltverystronglythatIshouldbeadoptedbycollegegraduatessoeverythingwasallsetformetobeadoptedatbirthbyalawyerandhiswife——exceptthatwhenIpoppedouttheydecidedatthelastminutethattheyreallywantedagirl.
Somyparentswhowereonawaitinglistgotacallinthemiddleofthenightasking"We’vegotanunexpectedbabyboy,doyouwanthim"Theysaid"Ofcourse."Mybiologicalmotherfoundoutlaterthatmymotherhadnevergraduatedfromcollegeandthatmyfatherhadnevergraduatedfromhighschool.Sherefusedtosignthefinaladoptionpapers.SheonlyrelentedafewmonthslaterwhenmyparentspromisedthatIwouldgotocollege.Thiswasthestartinmylife.
And17yearslaterIdidgotocollege.ButInaivelychoseacollegethatwasalmostasexpensiveasStanfordandallofmyworking-classparents’savingswerebeingspentonmycollegetuition.AftersixmonthsIcouldn’tseethevalueinit.IhadnoideawhatIwantedtodowithmylifeandnoideahowcollegewasgoingtohelpmefigureitout.AndhereIwasspendingallofthemoneymyparentshadsavedtheirentirelife.
SoIdecidedtooutandtrustthatitwouldallworkoutokay.ItwasprettyscaryatthetimebutlookingbackitwasoneofthebestdecisionsIevermade.TheminuteIdroppedoutIcouldstoptakingtherequiredclassesthatdidn’tinterestmeandbeginpinginontheonesthatlookedfarmoreinteresting.
Itwasn’tallromantic.Ididn’thaveadormroomsoIsleptonthefloorinfriends’rooms.IreturnedcokebottlesforthefivecentdepositstobuyfoodwithandIwouldwalkthesevenmilesacrosstowneverySundaynighttogetonegoodmealaweekattheHareKrishnatemple.Ilovedit.AndmuchofwhatIstumbledintobyfollowingmycuriosityandintuitionturnedouttobepricelesslateron.Letmegiveyouoneexample:
ReedCollegeatthattimeofferedperhapsthebestcalligraphyinstructioninthecountry.Throughoutthecampuseveryposter,everylabeloneverydrawerwasbeautifullyhandcalligraphed.BecauseIhaddroppedoutanddidn’thavetotakethenormalclassesIdecidedtotakeacalligraphyclasstolearnhowtodothis.Ilearnedaboutserifandsanseriftypefacesaboutvaryingtheamountofspacebetweendifferentlettercombinationsaboutwhatmakesgreattypographygreat.Itwasbeautiful,historical,artisticallysubtleinawaythatsciencecan’tcaptureandIfounditfascinating.
Noneofthishadevenahopeofanypracticalapplicationinmylife.ButtenyearslaterwhenweweredesigningthefirstMacintoshcomputeritallcamebacktome.AndwedesigneditallintotheMac.Itwasthefirstcomputerwithbeautifultypography.IfIhadneverdroppedinonthatsinglecourseincollegethe"Mac"wouldhaveneverhadmultipletypefacesorproportionallyspacedfonts.AndsinceWindowsjustcopiedtheMacit'slikelythatnopersonalcomputerwouldhavethem.IfIhadneverdroppedoutIwouldhaveneverdroppedinonthatcalligraphyclassandpersonalcomputersmightnothavethewonderfultypographythattheydo.OfcourseitwasimpossibletoconnectthedotslookingforwardwhenIwasincollege.Butitwasvery,veryclearlookingbackwards10yearslater.
Againyoucan’tconnectthedotslookingforwardyoucanonlyconnectthemlookingbackwards.Soyouhavetotrustthatthedotswillsomehowconnectinyourfuture.Youhavetotrustinsomething——yourgutdestinylifekarmawhatever——becausebelievingthatthedotswillconnectdowntheroadwillgiveyoutheconfidencetofollowyourheartevenwhenitleadsyouoffthewell-wornpathandthatwillmakeallthedifference.
Mysecondstoryisaboutloveandloss.
Iwaslucky——IfoundwhatIlovedtodoearlyinlife.Woz1andIstartedAppleinmyparents'garagewhenIwas20.Weworkedhardandin10yearsApplehadgrownfromjustthetwoofusinagarageintoatwobilliondollarcompanywithover4000employees.We'djustreleasedourfinestcreation——theMacintosh——ayearearlierandIhadjustturned30.
AndthenIgotfired.HowcanyougetfiredfromacompanyyoustartedWellasApplegrewwehiredsomeonewhoIthoughtwasverytalentedtorunthecompanywithmeandforthefirstyearorsothingswentwell.Butthenourvisionsofthefuturebegantodivergeandeventuallywehadafallingout.WhenwedidourBoardofDirectorssidedwithhim.Andsoat30Iwasout.Andverypubliclyout.Whathadbeenthefocusofmyentireadultlifewasgoneanditwasdevastating.
Ireallydidn’tknowwhattodoforafewmonths.IfeltthatIhadletthepreviousgenerationofentrepreneursdown——thatIhaddroppedthebatonasitwasbeingpassedtome.ImetwithDavidPackardandBobNoyceandtriedtoapologizeforscrewingupsobadly.IwasaverypublicfailureandIeventhoughtaboutrunningawayfromthevalley.Butsomethingslowlybegantodawnonme:
IstilllovedwhatIdid.TheturnofeventsatApplehadnotchangedthatonebit.IhadbeenrejectedbutIwasstillinlove.AndsoIdecidedtostartover.
Ididn’tseeitthenbutitturnedoutthatgettingfiredfromApplewasthebestthingthatcouldhaveeverhappenedtome.Theheavinessofbeingsuccessfulwasreplacedbythelightnessofbeingabeginneragainlesssureabouteverything.Itfreedmetoenteroneofthemostcreativeperiodsofmylife.
DuringthenextfiveyearsIstartedacompanynamedNeXTanothercompanynamedPixarandfellinlovewithanamazingwomanwhowouldbecomemywife.Pixarwentontotheworld’sfirstcomputer-animatedfeaturefilmToyStoryandisnowthemostsuccessfulanimationstudiointheworld.InaremarkableturnofeventsAppleboughtNeXTandIretunedtoAppleandthetechnologywedevelopedatNeXTisattheheartofApple’scurrentrenaissance.AndLaureneandIhaveawonderfulfamilytogether.
I'mprettysurenoneofthiswouldhavehappenedifIhadn’tbeenfiredfromApple.ItwasawfultastingmedicinebutIguessthepatientneededit.Sometimelife——Sometimeslifegoingtohityouintheheadwithabrick.Don'tlosefaith.I'mconvincedthattheonlythingthatkeptmegoingwasthatIlovedwhatIdid.You’vegottofindwhatyoulove.
Andthatisastrueforyourworkasitisforyourlovers.Yourworkisgoingtofillalargepartofyourlifeandtheonlywaytobetrulysatisfiedistodowhatyoubelieveisgreatwork.Andtheonlywaytodogreatworkistolovewhatyoudo.Ifyouhaven’tfoundityetkeeplooking——anddon’tsettle.Aswithallmattersoftheheartyou’llknowwhenyoufindit.Andlikeanygreatrelationshipitjustgetsbetterandbetterastheyearsrollon.Sokeeplooking——don’tsettle.
Mythirdstoryisaboutdeath.
WhenIwas17Ireadaquotethatwentsomethinglike:
"Ifyouliveeachdayasifitwasyourlastsomedayyou’llmostcertainlyberight."Itmadeanimpressiononmeandsincethenforthepast33yearsI’velookedinthemirroreverymorningandaskedmyself:
"IftodaywerethelastdayofmylifewouldIwanttodowhatIamabouttodotoday"Andwhenevertheanswerhasbeen"No"fortoomanydaysinarowIknowIneedtochangesomething.
RememberingthatI’llbedeadsoonisthemostimportanttoolI’veeverencounteredtohelpmemakethebigchoicesinlife.Becausealmosteverything——allexternalexpectationsallprideallfearofembarrassmentorfailure——thesethingsjustfallawayinthefaceofdeathleavingonlywhatistrulyimportant.RememberingthatyouaregoingtodieisthebestwayIknowtoavoidthetrapofthinkingyouhavesomethingtolose.Youarealreadynaked.Thereisnoreasonnottofollowyourheart.
AboutayearagoIwasdiagnosedwithcancer.Ihadascanat7:
30inthemorninganditclearlyshowedatumoronmypancreas.Ididn’tevenknowwhatapancreaswas.ThedoctorstoldmethiswasalmostcertainlyatypeofcancerthatisincurableandthatIshouldexpecttolivenolongerthanthreetosixmonths.Mydoctoradvisedmetogohomeandgetmyaffairsinorderwhichisdoctor’scodefor"preparetodie."Itmeanstotryandtellyourkidseverythingyouthoughtyou’dhavethenext10yearstotelltheminjustafewmonths.Itmeanstomakesureeverythingisbuttonedupsothatitwillbeaseasyaspossibleforyourfamily.Itmeanstosayyourgoodbyes.
Ilivedwiththatdiagnosisallday.LaterthateveningIhadabiopsywheretheystuckanendoscopedownmythroatthroughmystomachintomyintestinesputaneedleintomypancreasandgotafewcellsfromthetumor.Iwassedatedbutmywifewhowastheretoldmethatwhentheyviewedthecellsunderamicroscopethedoctorsstartedcryingbecauseitturnedouttobeaveryrareformofpancreaticcancerthatiscurablewithsurgery.IhadthesurgeryandthankfullyI’mfinenow.
