overallexplanation
Thisisa"classic"Donnepoem.Init,heshowsoffhisvastknowledgeofeverythingfromalchemytoastronomy,andputshismostfamoustechnique,theconceit,togreatuse.ThereisarumorthatthispoemwaswrittenbyDonnetohiswife,beforehewentawayonalongholidaywithhisfriends,leavingherathome.Itisimpossibletoprove,anddoesn'treallymatter.Iwill,however,refertothetwocharactersinthepoemasDonneandhiswifeinthesecomments.
Donne'sbasicargumentwasthatmostpeople'srelationshipsarebuiltonpurelysensualthings-iftheyarenottogetheratalltimes,therelationshipbreaksdown.Donneassertsthatthelovebetweenhimandhiswifeisdifferent-itisnotapurelysensualrelationship,butsomethingdeeper,a"loveofthemind"ratherthana"loveofthebody".Thislove,hesays,canendureeventhoughsometimestheloverscannotbeclosetoeachotheratalltimes.
Donneusessomeveryevocativeimageryinthispoem.Firstofall,thepartingoftwoloverslikeDonneandhiswifeislikenedtothedeathofavirtuousman.Asavirtuousmandies,heknowsthathehasreconciledhimselftoGodandwillthereforebeacceptedintoheaven.Thushediesinpeaceandcalm,andthepeoplesurroundinghimathisdeathbeadaresad,butnotanguished.Inthesameway,whentwovirtuousloverspart,thereisnopain,becausetheyknowthateachwillbetruetotheother,evenwhentheyareapart.Thepeoplesurroundingthedyingmanarequietpartlysoasnottodisturbhim-inthesameway,Donnesaysthattoomuchoutwardshowofemotiononthepartofoneloverwouldjustdisturbtheother.
Donneisthenverydisparagingoftheloveoftherestofthepopulation.Thewailsandscreamsandtearsthat"ordinary"loversdisplaywhentheymustpartisshowntobesimplyanact,withnorealemotioninit.
Theloversarethenlikenedtoplanetarybodies.Insuchaway,Donneplacesthemabovethe"mortalearth".Unlikenaturaldisasters,whichareunpredictableandchaotic,themovementoftheplanetsispeacefulandcalm,eventhoughtheplanetsmovemuchfurther.
Donne'smostfamousconceitisthenintroduced.Thetwoloversarelikenedtothetwopointsofacompass.Atfirstthisseemsridiculous,butDonneshowshowitmakessense.Theideaofthewifestayingandmindingthehousewhilethehusbandgoesawayisold-fashionednow,butwecanstillcomprehendit.Thereisalotmoreexplanationofthe"compass"conceitbelow.

(选自王佐良主编《英国诗选》,上海译文出版社,1988年版)《别离辞•节哀》是英国玄学派诗人约翰•多恩(JohnDonne)在离别前写给妻子的,可以说是他最有代表性的作品。
在这首诗中,多恩用圆规的两只脚比为夫妻关系。
妻子是定脚,永远在中心,当丈夫离别(即一只脚去画圆)的时候,妻子(定脚)也随之旋转,比喻夫妻虽然分离,却彼此相连、互相支撑。
只有妻子(定脚)坐在中心,坚定不动时,“我的圆圈才会准”,暗示爱人的忠贞不渝使他一生美满,使他能将此生画一个满圆。
邓恩的爱情诗<别离辞•节哀>是玄学诗的经典之作.为让完满的爱情以感性的形式再现,诗人借用大量的圆意象作为隐喻.如按传统修辞学的观点把隐喻两个项的相似点局限于对语言形式的分析,邓恩式隐喻显然"牵强附会,荒诞不经".理查兹博士(I.A.Richards)的"互相作用"理论(InteractionTheory)指出,隐喻是思维的互相交流而非词语的相互作用.这一理论对邓恩的奇喻有很强的解释力.现试用这一理论分析诗中圆形意象的隐喻意义.约翰•多恩(JohnDonne)出生在伦敦一个富有的天主教商人家庭,曾在牛津和剑桥接受高等教育,但因为家庭是天主教徒而未能取得学位。
后为跻身仕宦而在伦敦学习法律,并于90年代中叶参加远征军赴西班牙加的斯港和亚速尔群岛作战。
归来后任掌玺大臣埃格顿的秘书,被派往议会工作。
1601年他因与埃格顿夫人的侄女私奔结婚而去职并遭逮捕。
出狱后生活潦倒,抛弃仕宦梦想而改信国教,于1615年成为牧师。
从1621年至死,多恩任伦敦圣•保罗大教堂的教长。
任教职期间作大量布道演讲,后结集印行,成为英国散文精品。
多恩的诗歌创作大体分成三个时期。
1601年结婚以前为第一个时期,他的爱情诗大多为此时所作。
多恩生前没有诗集行世,其诗集是在他死后两年出版的,诗集中第一部分《歌与短歌》包括了他早年最精彩的爱情诗,共有50余首。
第二个时期是自结婚至供职教会(1615年),在此期间写的诗大都属应酬或记事性质,成就不高,但其中《挽歌》(20首)、《讽刺诗》(7首),尚可一读。
第三个时期是自供职教会至谢世,以宗教诗为主,代表作为《神圣十四行诗》(19首)。
此时诗人虽早已皈依国教,但内心里新旧信仰、现世来世的矛盾始终存在,他的宗教诗由此也就包括怀疑、愤懑、轻蔑、嘲讽等不同情感,第10首《死神莫骄横》便是一例,该诗写得激昂有力,是多恩宗教诗中的佳构。
但最能体现多恩独特怪异风格还是他早年写的爱情诗歌。
多恩的爱情诗主题大体有两类。
其一是抒写爱的忠诚,如《早安》、《别离辞:
节哀》等。
其二为嘲弄女性对爱情的不忠不信,如《歌:
去吧,跑去抓一颗流星》、《爱的炼金术等》。
这是罗马诗人奥维德爱情诗的传统,也是17世纪诗人常写的主题。
但多恩作为一个身处动荡年代、必须在旧学说旧信仰和新学说新信仰之间作出抉择的诗人,他对贞节问题的怀疑似乎又是他对于整个人生和社会的怀疑的一种表现。
不过,作为玄学派大师,无论上述哪类主题,多恩都采用了一种崭新的方式来加以表达。
他彻底抛弃了彼特拉克式抒情诗惯有的直接明白的陈述和一目了然的比喻,而另辟蹊径,走了一条以形象比喻传达思想,通过思想表达感情的新路。
换句话说,他的爱情诗充满激情,但不是把感情直接说出,而是把感情哲理化;他的爱情诗中不乏思想,但也不是把感情直接说出,而是把思想知觉化、意象化。
这种用与感情等量的理智来描写一种感情状态的方式,使诗歌在智力与激情、思想与知觉上达成了某种平衡,从而根本改变了爱情诗单纯抒情的常规。
多恩还一反文艺复兴爱情十四行诗从自然景物中取喻的传统,而大量从天文学、地理学、医学、数学等当时的新知识中发掘意象,并根据自己的独特的感受和经验将表面明显无关的观念与事物“生拉硬扯”地扯到一块(如把夫妻比作双脚圆规、把恋爱的情人比作跳蚤),这种竟象或比喻虽有时显得晦涩和缺乏共通性,但却决无变成陈词滥调的危险。
有时甚至能像闪电一般有力,给读者带来一瞥真理。
有时乍看之下显得离奇,思索过后却使人震慑于其惊人的准确性和深度。
多恩的爱情诗除充满哲理论辩和新词怪喻之外,还大量运用似非而是的悖论,新奇巧妙的构思和机智幽默的调侃,这些手法在诗艺上统称为“巧智”(wit)。
在英国诗歌史上,多恩并不是第一位使用巧智的诗人,然而,在他之前,除了莎士比亚的几首诗外,这种技巧还仅局限戏剧诗和讽刺诗创作。
多恩却将其推而广之,大量地普遍地运用于爱情诗甚至宗教诗上,从而造成严肃与讽刺、激情与戏谑兼而有之综合效果。
在诗歌格律上,多恩也一反伊丽莎白诗歌谐和柔美的乐调,而往往显得急促突兀。
本•琼森曾批评他“不协律”,其实他是故意为之的。
他还把日常口语大量引入诗中,采用口头谈话方式,显得亲切和富于戏剧性。
在诗体上他尝试过多种形式,但总的趋势是走向双韵体,这也为后人开了路。
后世对多恩的评价褒贬不一。
他的诗集出版之初,曾引起诗坛轰动,许多诗人竞相模仿他的作品。
但古典主义者则对他的诗颇有微词,德莱顿说他“喜欢卖弄玄学”,约翰逊说他用哲学论辩的方式写诗,把不伦不类的概念用蛮力硬扯在一起。
后起的浪漫主义诗人崇尚的情感,对多恩的诗也不甚欣赏。
直到20世纪,格里厄逊教授重新编订多恩诗集,并由艾略特大力推崇和宣传,多恩在英国诗歌史上的地位才重新得到确定。
以艾略特为代表的现代派诗人把多恩的诗当作反对维多利亚后期新浪漫主义甜腻诗风的武器,并从中得益良多。
