Well,whenIwasgrowingupinIndia,myparentswere,youknow,veryopenandfreewithmoney.SoifIwantedsomething,theywouldsay,“OK,youcangoaheadandtakethis.”AndIthinkthatspoiledmealittlebit,becauseIwouldjust,whateverIwanted,I’dtakethemoneyandgobuyit,andIdidn’treallyrealizetheimportanceofsavingmoney.SowhenIgrewup,Iwastwenty-two,andIleftIndiatogotoSingapore,andIwasonmyown,andIhadascholarship,andmyfatherwould,onthephone,hewouldaskme,“So,howmuchmoneyhaveyousaved?
”AndIwaslike,“Whatareyoutalkingabout?
I’mnotsavinganymoney.”Andhegotmarried,andhewantedmetostartsavingmoney.ItwasveryhardformetosavemoneybecauseIwouldgooutandwalkpastashopthathadclothesandgo,“Oh,Iwantthat,”andIwouldgoin,getit,andbereallyhappy.Itmademehappy,youknow.But,IthinkafterayearorsowhenIrealizedthatIhadtotakecareofmyself,notonlynow,butlet’ssayayearfromnow,andayearfromnowImightnothavethemoneythatI’mgettingnow,soIhavetostartsavingsothatI’mnot,youknow,nothestreetswithoutanymoney.SoIstartedsaving,butIstillhadahardtimewithit.Mysisterisverygood.Sheisverystingywithmoney,youknow.AndwhenIwasinIndia,Iwouldtellher,“Oheon,goon,spendthemoney.Youknow,ifyouwantsomething,gogetit.”Andshewouldalwaystellme,”Youshouldthinkaboutourparents.They’remakingallthismoneyforus,butweshouldn’tspenditjustlikethat.”IthinknowIamalittlebetteraboutsaving,butnotverygood.NotasgoodasIcouldbe.
