REFLECTION
Adultlearningasalearningexperience,referstoadultlearningandacquiringnewknowledge,skills,emotionsandattitudesonthebasisofpreviousexperience.Itincludesadultexperientiallearningthroughself-directedmanner,andalsoincludesexperientiallearningundertheguidanceofteachers.Adultlearningexperienceisnotafigmentoftheimagination,whichisbuiltonthebasisofcertainobjectiveandscientifictheory.Onanobjectivebasis,theadulthasawealthofknowledgeexperienceandlifeexperience,whichareimportantforlearningresources;emphasisonunderstandinglearningandcooperativelearning;adultteachingfocusonindividualizedandapplyingtheirknowledge,teachersandstudentsteachandlearnwitheachother.Onthetheoreticalfoundation,the“empiricalnaturalism”educationalphilosophy,psychology,“cooperativelearning”teachingtheory,adulteducationtheoryforadultslearningexperiencetoprovideascientifictheory.Therefore,learningexperienceismorepopular.
Iwanttointroduceonelearningexperienceofminebriefly
WhenIwasdoingbachelor,mymajorwasmarketing.ButwhenIchosethemasterstudyfield,Iwantedtotrydifferentmajorstocompletemystudy.SoImadeachoicetostudyHRDwhenIappliedUPM.Actually,forme,Iamlackoftheknowledgebackgroundandworkingexperience,soIdon’tknowhowtolearnit.IhavetoconsultsomeclassmatestheyworkedintheHRDfield.Atleast,thefirststepIshouldlistaplanformystudy,listeverydaylearningcontentandwhatIshouldknowinoneday,listeveryweeklearningtask.Followingtheresteps,Imaygetabetterlearningperformance.Intheclass,Itakenotesandreviewthemafterclass.Forunclearknowledge,IsearchtheinformationusinginternettoolsorasksomeclassmatesuntilIamclearaboutthem.IreadsomejournalsandarticlesduringweekendsorfreetimetoenrichmyknowledgegapaboutHRD.IrecitethecontentedIwrotedownonthenotebook,whichisvalueformyselfatleastoncetwoweeks.Perhaps,IhavenotmasteredthemoreknowledgeaboutHRD,butIcontinuedoingthelearningplan.
1TheObjectivesofLeaningExperience
Thereasonoflearningexperienceistocreatechange.Thiscouldincludeachangeintheirskills,behavior,knowledgelevel,eventheirattitudesaboutthings(AdultEducationCentre,2005).Themajordifferencesinadultlearners,comparedtoschool-agechildren,areinthedegreeofmotivation,theamountofpreviousexperience,thelevelofengagementinthelearningprocess,andhowthelearningisapplied.Adultbringtothelearningexperiencepreconceivedthoughtsandfeelingsthatwillbeinfluencedbyeachofthesefactors.
·Toexpectlearningexperiencestoestablishbehaviorsthatmaketheirlivesorworkmoreefficientandeffective.
·Tocreateanopportunityforlearnerstoengageandapplyacademicunderstandingsthroughhands-onexperience,whilelearnerscanlearnnewinformationabouttheworld.
·Totakelearner’slearningbeyondtheclassprovidingthemwithnewperspectivesandexperiencewhileallowingthemtomakepersonalcontactwiththecommunity.
·Tohavelearningexperiencethroughthispracticalapproachtolearninginordertogainconfidenceintheirownabilities,anddiscoverinnovativewaystoovercomeobstaclesandturnaclassprojectintoalifeexperience.
·Fororganizationmanagers,theperceivedrisksrelatedtoorganizationdecreaseandthecompaniesrespondbycommittingmoreresources,utilizinghigher-levelnewmodestooperate,andexpandingintomoredistantmarkets.
·Todealwithsomeproblemslearnersmeet,includinglifeproblems,learningproblems,psychologicalproblemsandetc.

2TheScopeofLearningExperience
(1)LearningArea
Leaningexperienceisakindoflearningbutbasedonpeople’sexperience.Traditionally,adultsalwayslearnknowledgeandskillsinvolvedownareaswhattheywanttoknowthroughclasslearning,e-learningclassandprovidingprivatetutorforclass,whilenowadultsneedtolearnthelatestknowledgeorskillsbyclass,seminarsandworkshoptoshareownlearningexperience.Underthissituation,learnerscangetsomeknowledgeandskillswhattheyneverknewandusethemtoguidethemlife,studyingandworkingdirectly,getsomelessonsandavoidsomebarriers.
(2)WorkingArea
Duringtheworkingarea,wehavetoconsidertrainingintheorganization.Nomatterwhatmanagementtrainingorleadershiptrainingoremployeetraining,trainertrainslearnersbytheoriesandpracticalexperienceduringmanagement.Duringtraining,traineesalsocansharingtheirexperiencetoothersandknowhowtogetagoaltoachieveit,andhowtoworkwellandcommunicatewellwithcolleagues.
(3)LifeArea
Inonefamily,familymembersconsistofparentsandchildren.Parentsalwaysareadultlearnerstoaffectandteachtheirchildrenbytheexperiencethesummarized.Forexample,howtoteachchildrenhaveagoodbehavior;howtohelpchildrensolvetheirproblems;howtoteachtheirchildrentomakeaplan,prepare,evaluateandcompletetheirstudy;alloftheseneedparents’positivelearningexperiencetoreflect.
3CategoriesofAdultLearnersParticipatingInLearningExperience
Forthecategoriesofadultlearners,therearetwomainkinds.Oneisthatadultswhoarepursuingstructuredprogram,theotheristhatadultswhoarepursuingnon-structuredlearningprogram.
(1)StructuredLearningProgram
Structuredlearningmustbeapurposefullearningactivity,anactivityundertakenfortheexpresspurposeoflearning,suchasatrainingcourse,oracompanybriefingonanewmarket,wheretherearedefinedlearningoutcomestobeachieved,suchaslearningaboutaspecifiednewmarket,oraspecifiednewtypeoffund.Itmustbeverifiable,throughattendancerecords,orthroughtheindependentloggingofane-learningrevisioncourse.
(2)Non-StructuredLearningProgram
Thiselementincludesallunaccompaniedlearningactivitiesundertakenbytheindividualmember.Specifically,itisasolitarylearningelementwhichisnotverifiable;itcoversreadingofdocuments,articlesandpublicationseitherinprintoronline.
Accordingsomearticlesandjournals,therearethreemainlearningexperienceadultlearnersparticipating.Oneofthemisgrouplearningexperience,theotherisindividuallearningexperienceandtherestofthemisblendedlearningexperience.
(1)GroupLearningExperience
Itissynchronouswithliveevent.Thisinstructionrequiresthesimultaneousparticipationofallstudentandinstructorsinrealtime.Learnersinteractwiththelearningmaterialsandtheinstructorataspecificlocationandtime,suchasbyworkshop,seminar,symposium,webinar,videoconference.
(2)IndividualLearningExperience
Learnerscanchoosetheirowninstructionaltimeframeandlocationandinteractwiththelearningmaterialsandinstructoraccordingtotheirownschedules.Anindependentstudywherethelearnerworkswithanapprovedprovidertodesignacustomizedcontinuingeducationexperience,suchasself-study,videotapes,audiotapes,correspondencecourse,programmedstudy,computer-assistedlearning,journalornewsletter.
(3)BlendedLearningExperience
Itcombineselementsofbothgroupandindividuallearningexperiences.Thesemay bedistancelearningoronlinelearningaswellasface-to-faceorinperson.Theseactivitiesmighthaveprerequisitereading,videotape,casestudyviewingthatmustbecompletedpriorto,during,oraftertheface-to-faceorin-personportion.
4TheImportanceofTheLearningExperience
Learningexperiencesareawaytothinkaboutwhatalearninginterventionmightbeinthecontextofdesiredendgoalsandoutcomes.Thiscantheninformourchoicesabouthowcommunicationchannelsandmodes,learningactivities,andresourcescometogethertobestsupporttheendgoalsandoutcomes,andalsohowthesechannelsandactivitiesmayevolveovertime.
(1)ForLearners
Leaningexperienceisincreasinglearners’understandingoftheclasstopicandhelptogainhands-onexperience,possiblyleadingtoaninternshiporjoblater.Learningexperiencecanhelplearnerstoexploreorcementtheirvaluesandbeliefsandsupportopportunitiestoactontheirvaluesandbeliefs.Besides,learningexperiencedevelopscriticalthinkingandproblem-solvingskillsandgrowstheirunderstandingofdiverseculturesandcommunities.Leaningexperiencealsocanimprovetheirabilitiestohandleambiguityandbeopentochangeandbecomemoreflexible.Todeveloporenhancetheirskills,especiallyintheareasofcommunication,collaboration,andleadership,simultaneously,testouttheirskills,interests,andvaluesinapotentialcareerpath,orlearnmoreaboutafieldthatintereststhem,learnerscanconnectwithprofessionalsandcommunitymemberswhoyouwilllearnfrom.
