Rustneversleeps.Whetherareferencetothe1979NeilYoungalbumoraproductdesignedtoprotectmetalsurfaces,thephraseinvokestheideathatcorrosionfromoxidation--themoregeneralchemicalnameforrustandotherreactionsofmetalwithoxygen--isaninevitable,persistentprocess.ButanewstudyperformedattheCenterforFunctionalNanomaterials(CFN)attheU.S.DepartmentofEnergy's(DOE)BrookhavenNationalLaboratoryrevealsthatcertainfeaturesofmetalsurfacescanstoptheprocessofoxidationinitstracks.
Thefindings,publishedintheProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences,couldberelevanttounderstandingandperhapscontrollingoxidationinawiderangeofmaterials--fromcatalyststothesuperalloysusedinjetengineturbinesandtheoxidesinmicroelectronics.
TheexperimentswereperformedbyateamledbyGuangwenZhouofBinghamtonUniversity,incollaborationwithPeterSutteroftheCFN,aDOEOfficeofScienceUserFacility.Theteamusedalow-energyelectronmicroscope(LEEM)tocapturechangesinthesurfacestructureofanickel-aluminumalloyas"stripes"ofmetaloxideformedandgrewunderarangeofelevatedtemperatures.
"Thesemicroscopesarenotthatfrequentlyfoundinordinaryresearchlabs;thereareonlyahandfularoundtheU.S.,"Suttersaid."Wehaveaprettylively'usercommunity'ofscientistswhocometotheCFNjusttousethistypeofinstrument."
ThemetalZhouwantedtostudy,nickel-aluminum,hasacharacteristiccommontoallcrystalsurfaces:
asteppedstructurecomposedofaseriesofflatterracesatdifferentheights.Thestepsbetweenterracesareonlyoneatomhigh,buttheycanhaveasignificanteffectonmaterialproperties.Beingabletoseethestepsandhowtheychangeisessentialtounderstandinghowthesurfacewillbehaveindifferentenvironments,inthiscaseinresponsetooxygen,Suttersaid.
SaidZhou,"Theacquisitionofthiskindofknowledgeisessentialforgainingcontrolovertheresponseofametalsurfacetotheenvironment."
Scientistshaveknownforawhilethattheatomsattheedgesofatomicstepsareespeciallyreactive."Theyarenotascompletelysurroundedastheatomsthatarepartoftheflatterraces,sotheyaremorefreetointeractwiththeenvironment,"Suttersaid."Thatplaysaroleinthematerial'ssurfacechemistry."
Thenewstudyshowedthatthealuminumatomsinvolvedinformingaluminumoxidestripescameexclusivelyfromthesteps,nottheterraces.ButtheLEEMimagesrevealedevenmore:
Thegrowingoxidestripescouldnot"climb"upordownthesteps,butwereconfinedtotheflatterraces.Tocontinuetogrow,theyhadtopushthestepsawayasoxygencontinuedtograbaluminumatomsfromtheedges.Thisforcedthestepstobunchcloserandclosertogether,eventuallyslowingtherateofoxidestripegrowth,andthencompletelystoppingit.
"Forthefirsttimeweshowthatatomicstepscanslowsurfaceoxidationattheearlieststages,"Zhousaid.
However,asonestripestopsgrowing,anotherbeginstoform."Astheoxidestripesgrowalongthetwopossibledirectionsonthecrystal,whichareatrightanglestooneanother,oneendsupwiththesepatternsofblocksandlinesthatarereminiscentofthegrid-basedpaintingsbyMondrian,"Suttersaid."Theyarequitebeautiful…"andpersistentafterall.
Infact,scientistswho'vestudiedadifferent"cut,"orfacet,ofthecrystallinenickel-aluminumalloyhaveobservedthatstepsonthatsurfacehadnoeffectonoxidegrowth.Inaddition,onthatsurface,aluminumatomsthroughoutthebulkofthecrystalcouldparticipateintheformationofaluminumoxide,andtheoxidestripescouldoverrunthesteps,Zhousaid.
Stillthedetailsanddifferencesofthetwotypesofsurfacescouldoffernewwaysscientistsmightattempttocontroloxidationdependingontheirpurpose.
"Oxidesarenotallbad,"Suttersaid."Theyformasaprotectivelayeragainstcorrosionattack.Theyplayimportantrolesinchemistry,forexampleincatalysis.Siliconoxideistheinsulatingmaterialonmicroelectroniccircuits,whereitplaysacentralroleindirectingtheflowofcurrent."
Knowingwhichkindofsurfaceamaterialhasanditseffectsonoxidation--orhowtoengineersurfaceswithdesiredproperties--mightimprovethedesignoftheseandothermaterials.

显微镜揭示原子高梯级对金属表面氧化的影响

无论是提及尼尔•杨1979年的专辑或是旨在保护金属表面的产品,氧化腐蚀——生锈和金属与氧气等反应的一般化学名称——是一种必然、持续的过程。
但美国能源部(以下简称DOE)布鲁克海文国家实验室功能纳米材料(CFN)中心进行的一项新研究表明,金属表面的某些功能可以阻止氧化进程。
这项研究结果发表在《美国国家科学院院刊》中,可用于理解并控制各种材料的氧化——从喷气发动机的涡轮机所使用的超合金催化剂到微电子氧化物等。
实验由宾厄姆顿大学的周光文(音)领导,他们与DOE科学用户设施办公室CFN的彼得•萨特进行了合作。
该小组使用低能量电子显微镜(LEEM)来捕获镍-铝合金表面结构的变化,其表面会形成金属氧化物“条纹”,并在一定范围内随温度的上升而增强。

科学家们已经知道,原子梯级边缘的原子是特别活跃的。

新的研究表明,参与形成氧化铝条纹的铝原子完全来自梯级,而不是平坦阶地。
但LEEM图像显示的更多:
日益增长的氧化条纹不能沿着梯级“爬”上或“爬”下,而只限于平坦阶地内。
为了继续增长,在氧气继续捕获边缘铝原子时,它们不得不推开梯级。
这会迫使梯级越来越紧密,最终减缓氧化条纹的速度增长,然后完全阻止它。
“我们第一次证明了,原子梯级可以在早期阶段减缓表面氧化,”周说。
然而,当1个条纹停止生长,另一个就开始形成。
“随着氧化物条纹沿着晶体的两个成直角的可能方向上生长,一端会以块与线的图形终结,这些图形会让人联想到Mondrian网格画作,”萨特说。
毕竟“它们非常挺漂亮,”并且是持续的。
事实上,已经研究了镍-铝合金结晶的不同“切面”或小面的科学家们观察到,该表面上的梯级对氧化物生长没有影响。
此外,在该表面上,整个块状晶体中的铝原子会参与氧化铝的形成,并且氧化条纹可能越过梯级,周说。
尽管如此,两种类型的表面的详情及差别可以为科学家提供新的方法,使他们可以根据想要达到的目的控制氧化。
“氧化物并非全是坏事,”萨特说,“它们可形成保护层来防止腐蚀,它们在催化中发挥重要的化学作用,例如,氧化硅是=微电子电路中的绝缘材料,在其中,它在引导电流流动方面起主要作用”。
了解某种材料的表面类型及其对对氧化的影响——或如何根据具有所需的性质设计表面,可能会改善对这些材料及其它材料的设计。

AccordingtoYasuhiroIshida,headoftheEmergentBioinspiredSoftMatterResearchTeam,theworkbeganfromasurreptitiousdiscovery,thatwhentitanatenano-sheetsaresuspendedinanaqueouscolloidaldispersion,theyalignthemselvesface-to-faceinaplanewhensubjectedtoastrongmagneticfield.Thefieldmaximizestheelectrostaticrepulsionbetweenthemandenticesthemintoaquasi-crystallinestructure.Theynaturallyorientthemselvesfacetoface,separatedbytheelectrostaticforcesbetweenthem.
Tocreatethenewmaterial,theresearchersusedthenewlydiscoveredmethodtoarrangelayersofthesheetsinaplane,andoncethesheetswerealignedintheplane,fixedthemagneticallyinducedstructuralorderbytransformingthedispersionintoahydrogelusingaprocedurecalledlight-triggeredin-situvinylpolymerization.Essentially,pulsesoflightareusedtocongealtheaqueoussolutionintoahydrogel,so
