Abstract
Thefragmentedandevermorespecializednatureoftoday’srailwaysystemsmakesitmoreandmorecomplextooperate.Anincreasingnumberofactorsareinvolvedintheoperationofarailwayservice.Infrastructuremanagementisbeingseparatedfromtheoperationalaspect.Apartfromthetraditionalstate-ownedtrainoperators,openaccessandprivateoperatorsstartusingthesameinfrastructureaswell.Additionally,anincreasingnumberofinformationsystems,suchasforreal-timepassengerinformationandentertainmentneedtoexchangeinformation.Therefore,Information&CommunicationTechnologieshaveanincreasinglyvitalroletoplayintheoperationoftherailways.However,astheuseofstand-aloneinformationsystemsimprovestheefficientoperationofasinglerailwaystakeholder,duetothecomplexfragmentednature,thereisaclearneedtointegrateandcorrelatetheavailableinformation.Ahighlevelofstructuredinteroperabilitybetweeninformationsystemsisrequiredtocorrectlycombineandmanagethiscomplexinformation.Severalmechanismsexisttointegrateinformationsystems.Theapproachpresentedinthispaperdiscussestheintegrationondatalevel.Themainbenefitofthisapproachisthatitsupportsindependentapplicationdevelopment.Itisafterallundesirableandnearlyimpossibletocentraliseapplicationdevelopmentinworld-widefragmentedandlargesystems,suchastherailways.Wewilldiscussanumberofapproachestowardsdataintegration.Twomaintechnologiesareconsidered,namelyUnifiedModellingLanguage(UML)andontologies.Anontology-basedsolutioniscomparedwithanUML-basedapproach.TheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofbothUMLandontology-basedapproachesarepresented.TheresultsareevaluatedbymeansofademonstratordevelopedaspartoftheInteGRailproject(IntelligentIntegrationofRailwaySystems),anFP6EUresearchproject.Webelievethatthisdemonstrator,theNetworkStatementChecker,isanidealcandidatetodemonstratetheadvantagesofanontology-basedintegratedinformationsystem.Thistoolallowstheinfrastructureoperatorstocombinethenetworkstatementsofdifferentcountriesindifferentformatsandtoanalysetheminatransparentway.Theontology-basedapproachshowsclearadvantagescomparedtotheUMLapproach,bymeansoftheformallydefinedmodel,butontheotherhandtheperformanceofthecurrentlyavailabletoolsisstilltobeimproved.However,webelievethattheaugmentedvalueofanontology-basedapproachisalsotobefoundinlowerdevelopmentcostsbecauseofitspotentialreuseinmultipleapplications,sincetheirphilosophyistoserveasadomainmodelinsteadofasadatamodelforaspecificapplication.

Scope
Authorsintroduceaninnovativecollaborativeapproachtopromotestakeholderinvolvementbyenhancingtheefficiencyandeffectivenessofmanagingalargegroupofstakeholders,harnessingcollaborationtechnology.Drawingparallelswithbiologicalneuralnetworksinhumans,aconceptualcollaborativebriefingframeworkisproposedtodemonstratehowbriefingteammemberscanworkcollaborativelyasavirtualorganisationthroughashareddigitalworkspace.Thisframeworkhasfivecoreelements:
integratedbriefingteam,collaborativebriefingjobplan,computersupportedcooperativeworkplatform,requirementsprocessingmodelsandfacilitationmodels.
Conclusion
Theproposedframeworksupplementsface-to-facediscussionwithcomputermediateddiscussion,dependingonthetype,flexibilityandinteractionneededfordifferentaspectsinbriefing.This“hybridbriefingmethod”wouldmaximisethebenefitstocostsratioofexpandedstakeholderengagementinprojectbriefing.Theframeworkisexpectedtopromotetheaccuracyandtransparencyof‘requirementsidentification’processing,theeffectiveengagementandappropriateintegrationofmorestakeholderinputsandfinally,toimprovetheefficiencyandreliabilityofbriefingoutputs.Lastly,someframeworklimitationsarediscussed,aimedatfurtherdevelopmentandacomputerprototype.
